Virtual Journeys of South Carolina

Decision Making:A Field Trip to the Zoo or Museum

This activity, written by Carolyn Putnam of Millwood Elementary School, involves the use of the Internet by students in making a decision about whether to take a field trip to the South Carolina State Museum or to Riverbanks Zoo. Students make a virtual visit to both places. They use the Yahoo Maps search engine to find information on how to get to their destination from their hometown.

Touring South Carolina

This activity, developed by Cynthia Parker of Alice Drive Middle School, takes students on various virtual tours around the state. Students visit some of the sites to get ideas for creating their own tour via a travel brochure, Web page, or PowerPoint presentation.

Monumental Attractions

Students make a virtual visit to various national monuments within the state of South Carolina when they participate in this activity written by Carolyn Putnam of Millwood Elementary School. The activity involves writing a report on the monument.

Who's Who in South Carolina

The Who's Who activity, developed by Susan Rigg of Wilder Elementary School, involves the learners in the discovery of information about famous South Carolinians. Activities vary from preparing an oral presentation and delivering it as an interview to dressing a doll in a period costume as well as preparing a PowerPoint presentation.

South Carolina Folklore

The South Carolina Folklore activity, developed by Cynthia Parker of Alice Drive Middle School, was created for middle school students and teachers. Students become social historians after reading a number of WPA oral histories from the 1930s on-line. Students are encouraged to seek out other on-line resources, such as the SCGenWeb Project (South Carolina Genealogy) to assist them with their research.

Symbolically Speaking

Symbolically Speaking was developed jointly by Carolyn Putnam and Cynthia Parker. This activity involves an on-line scavenger hunt to answer questions on South Carolina trivia. Links are provided to assist the learner in the search.

Let's Go Camping

Let's go camping was written by Carolyn Putnam. This activity is designed around a visit to South Carolina's state parks, on-line. Students are asked to create a travel brochure with a desktop publishing program.

A Journey Under the Sea

A Journey Under the Sea by Cathy Weathers of Kingsbury Elementary School takes the learners on a virtual field trip to Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach. Once there they are required to involves themselves in various authentic assessment type learning activities in the area of mathematics.
