This was followed by violence and dissension in the ranks of the PNTL (National Police of Timor Leste) and resulted in the returned presence of international troops, led by Australia, in Timor Leste.

Perhaps there was no time for him to blow his candles at his Debu Palace this year. Instead of being surrounded with family and friends, he was surrounded with looming problems caused by the sacking of almost 600 Timorese soldiers which had led to widespread violence, killing 30 and displacing around 150,000 people. Xanana was a guerilla fighter, but this time he is being troubled by his own soldiers, even forcing him to ask military assistance from neighboring Australia.

SITUATION. 1. The security situation in Dili is essentially unchanged over the last 24 hours with increasing calm accompanied by a continuation of sporadic looting, arson and gang clashes. On 30 May President Gusmao assumed emergency powers and direct control of the security forces and on 1 June the Ministers of Interior and Defence resigned.
