Survey SAYS . . .
Our own little try at the scientific
method
Recently we here at the institute
conducted a survey. We entered atheist/skeptic chat rooms and
asked them the following question:
Should people be forced to
go to a "Christian" church?
Only atheist/skeptics were allowed
to answer.
The overwhelming majority of
atheists/skeptics, 87%, said no. And we tend to doubt the sincerity
of the others who actually said yes.
We even got some *Heck No's!
(* This is the diluted version of the actual explicative used.
Just take out the "c" & "k" and substitute
a couple of toothpicks to construct the actual word).
Which brings us to the topic
at hand - "hell".
If people shouldn't be "forced"
to attend church, then it stands to reason that they shouldn't
be forced to go to heaven, which would be an infinitely amplified
version of church with billions of Christians milling about,
listening to sermons, singing praises to their Lord, praying,
reading scripture, watching Veggie Tales, etc.
And if they spent their entire
life avoiding church/God, it also seems that they wouldn't want
to go to a place that is infinitely worse (or better depending
on your point of view). And the right thing for God to do would
be NOT to force them into heaven.
And some suggest that hell may
very well be the total absence of God (which would include the
absence of all love, peace, joy, etc. if God is indeed the only
author of such things).
On the other hand, if God DID
force all to heaven (and it's still an infinitely amplified version
of church), then more than likely those forced their against
their will would be absolutely miserable.
It would be just like child who
is currently angry at their parent for forcing them to do something
against their will, and then gets hugged by the same parent.
This tends to make the child
more angry. And God's love shining (hugging) on people in heaven
who didn't want to be their for eternity would create a "hell"
for that person.
Either way, it seems that God
is off the hook for people going to hell.
