ROSEICOLLIS (peach-faced)
It is the most widely kept species and the most popular in the world. Its size is around 15-17 cm, and its weight is, male 45g and female 50g, and does not shows sexual dimorphism. This species is suffering nowadays a kind of transformation due to the appearance of a new roseicollis called longfeather, which size reaches 21 cm and its weight a 50% more than the normal weight. They are normally social among them, but very much aggressive towards other birds. During the breeding time, the hen carries the nesting material under the rump feathers. Although cocks stay in the nest, they do not transport material for the construction of the nest. The nest can be built in an elaborated way as the personata does, or simply to put a little of material in and that is all. It depends on the quantity of material that can be used. This material can be straw, weeping willow branches, pine branches or palm leaves. The last one is the most appreciated because let them make little strips that are easily transportable to the nest. Moreover, when they are fresh, give humidity to the nest. This humidity is essential for the eggs, avoiding the excessive hardening of them, what makes difficult the birth of the chicks.
The courtship is not so accentuated like in other eye ring species. The egg-laying normally consists of 5 eggs, and the incubation period lasts 22 days. The incubation can begin after the first egg, second or third. The chicks birth with an approximated weight of 3g, and they are fed by the hen from the second day, staying in the nest between 5-6 weeks. The hen feed the chicks the first 3 weeks, which is fed by the cock, which regurgitates the food. After this period, the feeding is done by the pair, but mainly by the cock. After the chicks leave the nest, the cock continues feeding them during the learning period, and also helps them to defend themselves from other birds.
The chicks are a bit lighter than the parents are, and the beak base is black, and it will get its final colour with the moult that happens when they are about 6 months old. Agapornis roseicollis have produced the largest number of mutations among the species, being the most recent the opaline one.
