Paropsine Leaf Beetles - Genera Paropsisterna

Subfamily Chrysomelinae, FAMILY CHRYSOMELIDAE

This page contains pictures and information about Paropsine Leaf beetles of Genera Paropsisterna that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.

Paropsisterna species are shining brown or black in colour. Some species have a few large red or orange spots on a black or brown background. Most of them, both adults and larvae, feed on eucalyptus, although some species we found feed on other plants.

Aerarium Leaf Beetle

Paropsisterna sp. (Paropsis aeraria ?), body length 16mm
We saw this Leaf Beetle on gum leaf once in Karawatha Forest during mid-summer. This is the largest leaf beetle we ever found. The beetle was shiny reddish-brown in colour with dark brown strips. It did not try to escape from our disturb, not fly away nor drop to ground as other leaf beetles often do. More information and pictures please click on here.

This Shiny Dark-brown Leaf Beetle was running very fast on gum stem when we taking its photos in Karawatha Forest during mid summer. The beetle has the very smooth and shiny case.

The beetle was found on a medium size Stringy Bark Gum tree. No other adults or larvae were found on the same tree.

Six-spotted Leaf Beetle
wpe8.jpg (35867 bytes)  wpe4.jpg (15444 bytes)
Paropsisterna sp., (Paropsis sexguttata ?) body length 12mm
We found this Eucalyptus Leaf Beetle on a She-oak tree (Allocasuarina sp.) in late summer, near Bulimba Creek in Wishart Outlook Bushland. The beetle is dark brown in colour with three bright orange spots on each wing covers and two on thorax. A year later in mid summer, we found another one (second picture) on a gum leaf. It dropped onto the ground and disappeared after we took one photo.

Yellow Skirt Leaf Beetle
wpe6.jpg (18495 bytes)  wpe8.jpg (16586 bytes)
Paropsisterna sp., body length 10mm
This beetle run quickly on stems. It drops and flies away if we come too close. The beetle is dark with yellow edges. Its thorax and head are yellow. A few of the beetles were found on the same young gum tree. The beetles were found in Karawatha Forest during mid summer. More information and pictures please click here.

Spotted Orange Leaf Beetle
wpe1F.jpg (26986 bytes)  wpe7.jpg (26186 bytes)
? Paropsisterna sp., body length 7mm
This Leaf Beetle look very similar to the I-Mark Leaf Beetle. When look very carefully, we believe they are difference species. They may just mimic each other. Pictures were taken in Alexandra Hill during early summer. More information and pictures please click on here.
