EpilogueWe lived by the weather network channel, every day revolved around it. Eventually we worked out the obvious. It's in their interests to sensationalise, to make the news more interesting,
so invariably they over hyped the problems.
Why - 40C is cold:Car tires have problems, some crack.Snow Clearing equipment freezes. Leaving a “warmed” car for 30 minutes means starting the car as if it’s been left out all night. Parking meters freeze – is that good or bad? There’s ice inside shop doors (even with overhead entrance heating!) You can put a bottle on the windowsill (inside) to chill, it’ll be frozen through by morning. 10 minutes – maximum time you can stay outside before frostbite.
Don’t rely on distances and times marked by maps. We got the impression that the cartographer had never traveled the route.
In particular from Winnipeg around Lake Superior to Sault Sainte Marie eg. Thunder Bay-Kenora 485 km, 90km/hr speed limit, single lane – CAA map says 4 ¼ hours !!
Towns en route and stopping to gas up are never considered in the calculations. Even the CAA people at Thunder Bay were telling us to ignore the distances/times,
even when the roads are in good condition.
Prejudiced stereotyped images of drivers that we would like to reinforce:BC - Valium induced.Alberta - Moderately wild and wreckless. Saskatchewan - ??, was only there for 6 hours! Manitoba - Reasonably respectful. Ontario – Completely unpredictable. Quebec - Wreckless and impatient. Us – Perfect of course. Best of:Best Super 8 – Sault Sainte MarieBest Steak House – The Prospector, Thunder Bay Best Sunday Brunch – The Fort Garry, Winnipeg Best Hotel Deal – The Fort Garry, Winnipeg Best Breakfast – Woolsey Café, Revelstoke Bets Boutique Hotel – The Auberge Sainte Antoine, Quebec City Best All Season Tires EVER – Nokian (made by Nokia)
