Alberta

Thursday 9th
Alberta here we come. Crossing the border, I've never encountered such a friendly border guard. We are allowed each a whopping total of 2 bottles of wine to bring back into Canada. We've picked up lots from the wineries on the west coast, but bought only 1/2 bottles to stay within our limit (and consumed lots of it during our week in Colorado).

Driving up to Calgary we finally encounter snow on the road. It's pretty flat and dull, but I'm happy to be back in Alberta. I remember Calgary as a very easy city to drive downtown. But now, with all the crazy construction going on, it's a nightmare. Our hotel is right downtown, another great deal at a Fairmont - the Palliser. We have a quiet room on the back of the building but with all the construction going on, we can still hear some noise - the price of progress!
We have a light dinner at the hotel, before turning in early.

Friday 10th
We spend the day walking around in awe at the incredible construction going on. It's all office space, supposedly Calgary has the lowest vacancy rate in North America for office space, must be all the oil companies opening up the tar sands. There's already limited residential accommodation in the downtown. We spend lunch with some friends J&B, who own the Uptown Theatre on 8th. Yes, office real estate is booming they confirm.

We go to Hys for dinner, a tradition for us. We get the same waiter we've had for the past 3 years. Hys is closing New Years Eve, with new address as yet unknown, our waiter explains, and he's off to join the oil industry, like everyone else around here!

Saturday 11th
Second day in Calgary. Objective is to find 4 cases of decent wine to bring back to BC. We probably save a couple of hundred dollars - Oh for breaking the BC liquor board's monopoly.
