4 Lessons

Internet, Microsoft Word

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

What do I want the pupils to understand:

What the Internet is

How to use Internet software

How to search for information on the Internet

How to make use of the information you find

What do I want the pupils to be able to do:

Download a web site

Criticise web site content

Follow links to explore the Internet

Search the Internet

Copy from the Internet

Evaluate their work

DIFFERENTIATION

MUST

SHOULD

COULD

Students will have been able to use Internet software but they might have had difficulty in finding and selecting an appropriate site. Students find it difficult to apply appropriate critical data search skills. Students are developing the skills required to work autonomously.

Students must be able to work autonomously to locate an appropriate web site. They can create a piece of work combining text and at least one item copied from a web site. The work is of a basic standard. Students should have a skills level, which allows them to explore the internet independently.

Students will have produced work of a good overall standard, comparable to the task specification. They will have used techniques covered in the unit to produce an item suitable for its purpose. Students will have developed skills that make the Internet a useful tool in their school activities.

LESSON

1

Objectives: understand what the internet is, a web site, a URL, use a web browser to download a web site. As a class look through page 1 & 2 of the Help Sheet and make notes. Clarify the targets for the unit. At the computer demonstrate: connecting to the internet, opening a web browser, typing in a URL and downloading the site. Students to makes a note of and explore these web sites e.g. www.beeb.com a fun web site presenting information about BBC programmes, www.beano.com the website for the BEANO comic, www.yucky.com a web site about science, from the point of view of the weird and the disgusting, www.kidsdomain.com a web site about computer games, with reviews and free demonstrations

Homework

Students make a collection of URLs by looking out for them on the TV and in magazines. Also note down the subject of the web site (eg company or TV programme who set it up). Written in exercise books.

2

Objectives: to think critically about web site content, learn what links are and follow them, aware of and use search engines. As a class make notes on the remainder of the Help Sheet. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet…encourage students to think critically and evaluate web sites. Make note of useful search engines eg excite, webcrawler, yahoo, lycos, altavista, dogpile, askjeeves etc. At the computer, talk students through links, using the NASA (www.nasa.gov/gallery/index.html) site. Work with the class as they all connect to a named site and identify links. Continue to demonstrate how to connect to a web site search engine. Set pupils to search for a picture of a roller coaster, make a note of the URL.

Homework

Students should print a minimum of 3 of the web sites they found for homework last week and mark with a pen each of the links shown on the site. Students should also write a few notes about each site (e.g. What it’s about, a description of what the site contains, what age group it is aimed at)

3

Objectives: how to copy a picture and transfer it into Word, use and demonstrate skills they have developed, plan an activity in a methodical way, work independently to a plan. As a class go through the task that they will be attempting, emphasise how you will be assessing this unit referring to the Assessment checklist. Remind students to save work. Explain that they can choose a topic of their own choice, however they only have 1.5 lessons to complete the task. At the computer, students should load the Internet and type the URL for the roller coaster picture. Talk through how to copy the picture into Word. Explain to the students that they must copy at least one picture into their piece of work. Students should start by completing the planning form and to put their hand up to have their work checked before they start on the computer.

Homework

Students should spend some time on this project as it must be completed by the end of next lesson.

4

Objectives: use and demonstrate skills they have developed, review their own work with a critical eye. Students to complete task. (There is extension material if you require it). 15 minutes before the end of the lesson give out the evaluation sheet, emphasise it is an important part of the unit assessment and must not be rushed. Students hand in task.

Homework

Students complete evaluation for homework. Also revise from their notes for a short test next week.
