Andrew Harvey. M. D.
The medical profession of Dodge County has an able and successful representative in Dr. Andrew Harvey, of Fremont, whose practice but reflects the confidence felt in him by his fellow citizens. He was born in North Bend, Nebraska, October 26, 1884, a son of Andrew and Margaret (Ritchie) Harvey, the former of whom, a native of Scotland, came to the United States in 1869 and homesteaded in Dodge County, Nebraska, where for many years he was engaged in farming, later, however, going into the fruit and nursery business. He died in 1922. His widow survives him and resides in Fremont. Her father, James Ritchie, was also born in Scotland, from whence he came to Dodge County in 1873, and here he was engaged in farming until his death. The paternal grandfather, Andrew Harvey, was born in Scotland, and there he resided until 1873, when he followed his son to the United States and also homesteaded in Dodge County, and continued to farm until his death in 1908.
Doctor Harvey was graduated from the North Bend High School in 1903, and from Bellevue College in 1907. Entering then the medical department of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, he was graduated therefrom with the degree of Doctor of Medicine, and for eighteen months thereafter was an interne in the Swedish Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska. For a few months he was in a general practice in Craig, Nebraska, and in 1915 located permanently in Fremont, where he has built up a gratifyingly large connection. He belongs to the Dodge County Medical Society, the Nebraska State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, of which he is a fellow, the Elk Horn Valley Medical Society, of which he is president, and the Missouri Valley Medical Society, and he has been president of the county society. At different times he has read papers before the various medical associations that have received high commendation, and some of them have been published. He is a Blue Lodge, Chapter, Council and Knight-Templar Mason, and also belongs to the Royal Highlanders, the Modern Woodmen of America, Phi Rho Sigma medical Greek letter fraternity, and other orders. During the late war he was a member of the local draft board and also participated actively in all of the drives for war purposes.
On October 22, 1913, Doctor Harvey married Miss Mabel Thom, of North Bend, a daughter of Alex and Margaret (Egan) Thom, the former of whom came to North Bend in the early '80s, and was first engaged in importing finebred stock to Nebraska, but later entered the real-estate, banking and loan business. Mrs. Harvey was educated in North Bend, following which she became a student of Bellevue College. She is a member and officer of the local chapter of the Eastern Star, belongs to the Presbyterian Church, and is active in the social and club life of her home city. Doctor and Mrs. Harvey have three children: Dorothy Jean, who was born September 20, 1915; Alexander, who was born November 10, 1917; and Donald Andrew, who was born February 28, 1925.
