More Passages:A New History of Amherst County, Virginia by Sherrie S. McLeRoy and Wm. McLeRoy Hertiage Books Chapter titled Riches of the Earth Tobacco was not the only cash crop to be wrested from the earth of old Amherst. Extensive copper deposits in The Glades area along Buffalo Ridge attracted Colonel John Chiswell of Williamsburg. Born in Scotland, Chiswell had acquired 30,000 acres on the Rockfish River by 1739 and another 10,000 on Buffalo Ridge which he apparently bought from John (or James) Warren in 1749. Near the later site of "The Folly" (a tavern and cockpit), he and his partners, Robert Rose, Joshua Fry, and JOHN HARVIE, sank two shafts (75 and 47 feet deep) but had continuous problems with water, which resulted in a cave in and the deaths of several miners.

9th VIRGINIA CAVALRY ROSTER from "History of the Ninth Virginia
Cavalry in the War Between the States" by Brig. Gen. R.
L. T. Beale B. F. Johnson Publishing Company, 1899 pp. 149-177
from microfiche in Special Collections Department, Harold Washington
Library, Chicago IL transcribed by Thomas Walter Duda NOTE: The
rosters that follow should not be regarded as definitive. For
example, M. L. ARVIN is listed here as being a private in Company
G. Other rosters show him as being in Company K, 3rd Ohio Cavalry.
The rosters provided are an indication that the men named in
them served in those companies at some time during the war. The
descriptive names of the companies, the counties represented
by each company, and the dates of enlistment were added by the
transcriber. The names of the enlisted men were arranged in alphabetical
order by the transcriber whenever possible, remembering that
sergeants and corporals are enlisted rather than commissioned
or elected. Surnames have been capitalized by the transcriber.
Where the original text provides comments, it should be remembered
that these are as of the 1899 publication date. Any comments
enclosed in brackets [] are those of the transcriber. -------------
