Notes:
Martin Parmer nicknamed ("The Ring-tailed Panther"), a hunter and
trapper while
residing in Missouri. Born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee where he
married his
first wife. In early 1800 he came to Texas and settled in Jasper
County. After
his death Parmer County was named in his honor. Martin was elected
to the Texas
Senate in 1825, where he participated in the Fredonian Rebellion, he
served as
a president of the briefly lived Republic of Fredonia. He served as
Chief
Justice of Jasper County. Martin Parmer represented San Augustine
Municipality,
and signed his name Parmer, however all of his children used the
spelling
Palmer. The spelling Parmer was used by Martin and is used on his
tombstone.
Martin Parmer signed the Declaration of Independence of the Republic
of Texas.
Two of his sons William and Isham are listed as working in the
carriage trade
in Jasper County, Texas.
On page 700 in Tennessee Cousins, we find a Captain Martin
Parmer,1811; listed
among the men of Dickson,Tn. who served in the 25th Reg. of the
Light Infantry.
The writer believes this to be the same Martin Parmer who went to
Texas and
played as important role in the Republic of Texas. This list of
soldiers was
borrowed from Mrs. John T. Moore and also appears in the Tennessee
Historical
Quarterly.
