The photos below were taken in Historic Rothenberg, Germany. I lived about 15 - 20 minutes from Rothenberg for 14 months when I lived in Germany. It was always my favorite place to visit. The city still has the original wall around it, cobblestone streets hundreds of years old, and within the wall businesses are required to maintain the feel of "the old days" by having wrought iron signs to mark their storefronts. As an American, it was of course odd to see the "Golden Arches" of McDonald's in iron rather than in neon lights as we are used to! One of the other neat places to visit was Kathe Wohlfart's - where it is Christmas year round! But my favorite spot was the Garden at the end of town; almost a thousand years ago a castle stood there, but it was destroyed in an earthquake and never rebuilt. The chapel still stands and holds a war memorial to soldiers that died in the World Wars. In the summer there are musicians in the garden performing and flowers blooming. I could always find peace there, no matter what time of year. One of my favorite trivia facts about the town is that it is the city used in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - it was supposedly one of Walt Disney's favorite places, along with the Nueshwanstein Castle, which he superimposed into the city via cinema magic. They are actually 2 - 3 hours apart! So, the next time you watch the movie, and they are flying in to the city in the magic car, over a bridge that looks like a "double bridge" think of me! That is Rothenberg.
