1. Common Causes of Injury from Exercise

         The benefit of exercise is well known. On top of improvement and maintenance of health, it is a good leisure. Most athletic experts suggest about thirty minute's daily exercise.

         In Hong Kong, most popular exercises are jogging, football, swimming, tennis, badminton and golf,etc. Benefit from exercise can be sustained if we do it appropriately. On the contrary, injury may be resulted. Common causes of injury resulting from exercise are as follows.

 

a.

Full speed exercise before warming up and adequate preparation.

b.

Incorrect posture and lack of training.

c.

Over eating and influence of alcohol.

d.

Over one's exercise threshold.

e.

Performing strenuous exercise even under physical injury.

 

2. Common Injury from Exercise

We always hear tennis elbow and running knee. How are they caused? Tennis elbow simply results from over stretch of muscle and tendon of the wrist when doing back hand and repeating rotation of the wrist. Running knee is damage of ligament of the knee due to over running. Other injuries might occur in head, neck and spine, etc.


3. Prevention of Injury from Exercise

To safeguard injury from exercise, we can adopt the following measures.

 

a.

We have to be under the guidance of experts and consult them regarding correct posture and procedures.

b.

Adequate warm up and preparation before exercise is essential. Recovery exercise should be adopted after strenuous exercise.

c.

We have to stop and rest immediately once any injury is sustained. It is advisable to attend doctors for management.
