What are the favorite words? Well they are words that have somehow touched us in a special way. When they are spoken they take on a different, special meaning.

十字架 juu ji ka
(Christian Cross)
十字 by itself simply means a symbol of a cross. However, with the final it can only mean the Christian cross.
夢心地 yume goko chi
(in a dreamy state of mind; like being in a dream)

- one of the most useful verbs i know...
島流し shima nagashi
(banished to a desert island)
- Most useful when explaining why you were late for a meeting or class.

SUGGESTED USAGE: 僕は島流しにされました。
boku ha shima nagashi ni saremashita."
I was banished to a desert island!"

根負け kon make
to give up due to being worn out by someone's persistence

SUGGESTED USAGE: ゴジラは熊のプーさんの熱心さに根負けした。
gojira wa kuma no pu- san no nesshin sa ni konmake shita.
Godzilla, perceiving Winnie the Pooh's unbounded courage, admitted defeat.

三度の飯より san do no meshi yori
(something) is better than even 3 square meals (lit. 3 times meal less than...)

SUGGESTED USAGE: 三度の飯よりスカイダイビングが好き。
sando no meshi yori sukaidaibingu ga suki.
I like skydiving better than eating!

交際 kou sai
(dating,association)
交際を申し込む kou sai o moushikomu
(courting - politely hitting on someone. )

寒中水泳 kan chuu sui ei
Swimming in the dead of Winter
(Useful particularly in Winter)

SUGGESTED USAGE: 僕は ”白熊クラブ”に参加して、寒中水泳しました。
boku wa shiro kuma kurabu ni sanka shite, kan chuu sui ei shimashita.
"I joined the 'polar bear club' and went swimming in ice water."
 


顔面蒼白 (ganmen (face) souhaku (pale, blue & white))
(someone's) face becoming white or pale because of a sudden fear or shock

SUGGESTED USAGE: ゴジラは熊のプーさんの筋肉を見て、顔面蒼白になった。
gojira wa kuma no pu-san no kinniku wo mite, ganmensouhaku ni natta.
Upon seeing Winnie the Pooh's muscles, Godzilla's face paled


婚約者 kon yaku sha
(fiance,engaged person)


こんにゃく konnyaku
(konnyaku jelly)
Most Japanese eat it with boiled vegetables,it is like rubber,kind of sticky,it has no calories) <I am sure this was submitted by Yumi!>


腹話術 fuku wa jutsu
(ventriloquism)
Ok, I needed a 'v' word for my dictionary... But it is a nice word anyway!


夜逃げ yo nige
(night flight; fleeing in the night)

鮨詰め sushi zume
(packed in like sushi)

(direct hit)

宝の地図 takara no chizu
(treasure map)

SUGGESTED USAGE:熊のプーさんの宝の地図には秘密の蜂蜜のありかが書いてある。
kuma no pu-san no takara no chizu ni wa himitsu no hachimitsu no arika ga kaite aru.
