Hundreds of years ago the sorcerer Merlin released his demon half brother Etrigan to defeat the witch Morgan Le Fay. After she was defeated Merlin was unable to control Etrigan and the half demon began to travel the globe defeating the most powerful Empires. Merlin traveled as well, acting as advisors to those kings whose Empires were under attack but each time failing to stop his half brother. When Etrigan took on the Ottoman Empire in 1566 Merlin and the Sultan Suleiman were unable to defeat him and the Sultan left his scimitar in the sand of a roman temple where Merlin blessed the blade in the same way he had Excalibur and was forced to entomb his Eternity Book along with the scimitar. Four hundred and thirty three years later Dr. Selma Tolon discovered the book and blade while aiding in the rescue of earthquake victims. She risked her life to save some tourists and after they were safely out the building collapsed on her in an aftershock sending her down into the ruins of the roman temple where she found Merlin's spell book and drew the sword from the sand. Selma chose the name Janissary in the tradition of Turkish warriors who were both soldiers and servants. Selma has a medical degree from Stanford and speaks perfect English, she works long shifts at the ER in Turkey and helps out with the Red Crescent (like the Red Cross) after earthquakes. She recently got a chance to work with the JLA to finally defeat Etrigan. Bio by RavenChyld
RELATIONS WITH THE CORE MEMBERS: Martian Manhunter -
J'onn masqueraded as the Turkish hero Dervish before The Janissary received her powers.
They met briefly when J'onn handed over protection of the country to her. His description
of her to the JLA is as follows: "She appears to be some kind of sorceress and may
possess superhuman strength and stamina. What this young woman lacks in experience she
more than makes up for in unwavering dedication to the well-being of her country."
