Young Dick Grayson, circus performer with The Flying Graysons, watched in horror as his parents fell to their deaths from a sabotaged trapeze. The boy was taken in by Bruce Wayne, who eventually revealed himself as the Batman, Gotham's Dark Knight. Dick insisted on becoming his partner, and after intensive training became Robin, the Boy Wonder. Robin was a founding member of the Teen Titans, most of whom were originally the teenage sidekicks of older heroes: Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Wonder Girl (and sometimes Speedy). Robin was the leader of the Titans through most of its incarnations. Over the years, his relationship with the Batman became strained. He kept pushing himself to be as good as Batman, knowing in his heart he could never quite measure up. Finally, concluding that Robin would "always be the back half of 'Batman and...'" he decided to complete the break and forge a new identity as Nightwing. Nightwing spent most of his adolescence and early adulthood with the Titans, including a long-running romance with fellow Titan Starfire which brought them to the altar. The wedding was never completed, and they decided to go their separate ways instead, returning to their respective homes in Gotham City and the planet Tamaran. While Bruce Wayne recovered from a spine injury that would have left most people crippled for life, Dick donned the Batman costume to fill in for him. This led him to think about his own identity, and briefly retire from being Nightwing to discover life as Dick Grayson. His retirement lasted all of a week, and he was soon adventuring and fighting crime again, eventually moving to Blüdhaven to patrol a city on his own. Grayson now divides his time between his solo work in Blüdhaven and adventures with the latest incarnation of the Titans, occasionally helping out in Gotham when needed (such as during the city's time as a No Man's Land). RELATIONS WITH THE CORE MEMBERS: Batman - Bruce is
essentially Dick's surrogate father. They know each others' secrets, and while they trust
each other implicitly, there is still an edge to their interactions.
