Maribyrnong River, former Riverview Tea Gardens, Avondale Heights We retrace our steps until we get to the former Riverview Tea Gardens site. Here, the track branches in two - up the hill to Avondale Heights, or along the river bank. This time we'll take the river bank track.
Before long, it's hard to believe you're in the middle of metropolitan Melbourne, only 11 kilometres (as the crow flies) from the city centre.  Maribyrnong River Avondale Heights

The high river bank on your left, and a thick cover of trees on the opposite river bank screen the urban surroundings from view, and for a while it's just you, the river, and the birds.

Maribyrnong River viewed from Lily Street park Essendon As we approach the confluence of Steele Creek and the Maribyrnong, the path turns away from the belt of scrub along the river and heads back into the open grasslands, as there is no bridge over Steele Creek at this point.
