Pipemakers Park, Maribyrnong River Maribyrnong However, in a short distance we reach Pipemakers Park (see links page), a former industrial site now converted to parkland, but with some of the historic industrial remains preserved.
There are parking and picnic facilities here, and the Living Museum of the West (see links page). Birds frequenting this picnic area include Willie Wagtails, Wattle Birds and Red-Rumped Parrots.
Herons and Cormorants are around too, and are particularly fond of perching on the boat landing / fishing platform here. Fishing platform, Pipemakers Park, Maribyrnong River Maribyrnong
Shelter commemorating Irish women pioneers of the Saltwater River (Maribyrnong River) On a little further we come across a pleasant little shelter with seats, commemorating Irish women pioneers of the Maribyrnong.
The stories of these women have been told in a book by Joan Carstairs and Maureen Lane, called "Pubs, Punts and Pastures - The Story of Pioneer Irish Women on the Salt Water River". The Maribyrnong was known as the Salt Water River in the early days of European settlement.
