Essendon - Afton Street
to Pipemakers Park - This 6
kilometre circuit walk is in the residential areas of Essendon,
Maribyrnong and Ascot Vale. It features parks,
palm trees, lawns, bridges, picnic areas, playgrounds, cafes and a
pub. It is the most popular section with walkers, picnickers and
seagulls, and beautiful reflections can be seen on calm days. |
 |
Avondale Heights - Lily Street Park to Canning Reserve
- On this section of the walk, housing is not visible, or is visible
only in the distance
for most of the time. You travel up hill and down dale through
grasslands and some bush, coming across a picnic ground at the end.
There are some fine views of the river from the heights.

East Keilor - Brimbank Park - Brimbank Park is a
hilly park within a deep basin, with a mixture of grasslands and bush, criss-crossed with
walking and bicycle tracks. There are many picnic areas and
plenty of parking. There is also an information centre and cafe.
The Maribyrnong flows through it, and bird life is plentiful.

Footscray
Park - Footscray Community Arts Centre - The "business
end" of the river, with heavy industry a prominent feature of the
landscape, but several gems to make the walk worthwhile. |

See some
pictures of the Maribyrnong in flood, 25 October 2000.
The Maribyrnong has flooded on many occasions in the past, inundating
houses and businesses in the Maribyrnong area. On 25 October 2000
the flood waters were rising again, but luckily no buildings were
flooded on that occasion. See how close it was though!
