The Art of Punching

The stance and guard is a simple two-part exercise, which is the art of guarding the main target areas, which are your chin, solar plexus, ribcage and the temple. The stance is the art of using your body position for a counter attack with your speed and power. Your arms and hands are used to protect many of these areas from your elbow covering your rib cage by resting on your floating rib upwards until your hands are covering your chin and face area. By looking at the pictures below, you can see how he holds his hands and arms closed to his body and face and in a position to counter attack anyone who is trying to hit him.

Many boxers have used the stance as a tool in the ring, as you can see what is meant by lead and rear. By looking at the pictures, you can see how his left hand, foot has become his lead and his right hand, foot his rear. This is called the Orthodox stance and the other one is Southpaw stance, which is your right hand and foot lead. When you move onto punching, kicking and sparring you will soon understand the effects of your stance and guard.
