They fell for it, but only for a moment.  Apparently one of the men knew something of the arcane arts, and they quickly determined that the sound was also illusionary.  He stared at the elfin woman waiting to see what the next action was going to be.  He went over a spell in his mind, readying it to be cast at a moment’s notice that would douse the room in blinding light so that he might escape.  While he was finalizing the spell in his mind, the elfin woman pulled out the unconscious form of Xavia from a bag at her side.

Jolan was caught on what to do.  If he screamed out for her to leave Xavia be, he would surely be found.  If Jolan did nothing, than Xavia would surely die.  During his indecision, the choice had been made by the elvin woman.  She plunged her dagger deeply into the feathered body of Xavia.  A link that Jolan hardly remembered had existed between the two was instantly severed.  The mix of emotions followed by the shock of loosing what felt like an extension of himself was too much for Jolan, and he plunged deep into unconsciousness.

He awoke to a horrible pain coming from his wrists when he realized that he had been tied up.  He tried to scream but found that his mouth was gagged.  He stared at the human man before him.  The human stood casually looking at the tied sorcerer.  On his hand he wore the signet ring he knew so well.  The crossed arrows had sought him out at last.  He was about to pay for killing Devereau’s son.  He wished momentarily that he would have just kept running and not accepted the king’s reward, but it was far too late for that.  Luckily for Jolan he passed out long before the group finally killed him.

Early the next morning, the former janitor of the Phelan Manor, Lord Jolan was found with his only true friend, his familiar Xavia forcefully stuffed down his throat until only the tail feathers protruded through his broken, lifeless jaw.

No clue was found as to who had broken into the manor.  No evidence was collected that showed it was anything other than a robbery.  The brutality in which the lord was killed was reported all over the kingdom, but forgotten in less than a day.  Lord Jolan, Janitor of the Phelan Manor was forgotten by all but one man.  A man still recovering in a bed inside the temple of wee jas, giggling like a man who had lost his mind, over the news of his wife’s murderer’s death.  All the while holding the mysterious oilcloth wrapped package sent by his father, Devereau DeLevanadel, all the way from the Kingdome of Sales…
