Hercules the Great
The Temple of Zeus was built at such a time (460 B.C.) when the glory of the Olympic
Games was at its zenith. Built entirely of white marble, even the outer walls were also
adorned with marble bas-reliefs. Specimens of two such bas-reliefs were featured on two
Greek stamps. These two sculptural compositions show us the labours of Hercules and take
us into the astonishing world of myths and legends. The first stamp shows Hercules leading
the mighty bull to Mycenae - a prehistoric Greek city. The other stamp illustrates
Hercules holding up the vault of Heaven supported by Athena. A really Herculeun task for
any sculptor who works on marble stone!
