Chariot Races
In ancient Olympic Games Chariot races had been considered as the most exciting
and dangerous
event. These races were accompanied by great outbursts of
emotional zeal. The spectators of chariot
races often violently reacted to the events while they were watching. Chariot drivers
frequently raced at the risk of their lives for which they received nothing more than a
small woolen fillet. Two of the 12 Greek stamps issued in 1896 on the occasion of first
modern Olympics featured this event. The design was taken from an ancient Greek coin, the
facsimile of which can also be seen on a Greek stamp. Greece issued a number of stamps on
chariot races. Beside these, Yemen, Sweden and Equador also issued stamps depicting this
ancient Olympic event.
