The Temple of Zeus was considered to be the largest and most important building of ancient Olympia. It was built around 460 B.C. and was one of the largest Doric-style temples in Greece. The temple was richly decorated with sculptures much which is kept now in the Olympic museum. Within the temple there was the great gold ivory statue of Zeus - the king of Gods - a creation of famous sculptor Phidias. The Mali Olympic stamp gives us a distinct impression of the whole statue. The People's Republic of the Congo (1978) and Hungary (1980) also issued stamps featuring the statue of Zeus. The Greece's Olympic stamp shown here features an early Olympic coin which depicted the king Zeus
