Goddess Nike
In ancient times the Greeks worshipped 'Nike'
as the Goddess of Victory in
sports. However, in later on she also came to be known as a symbol of victory in
warfare. The marble statue of Goddess 'Nike' was first discovered outside the
Temple of Zeus. This nine-meter winged sculpture was first depicted on the
world's earliest sports stamps issued by Greece in connection with first modern
Olympic Games held in 1896. The 1948 London Olympic stamp of Great Britain
featured the Goddess of Victory in sports.
