Olympic Sculptor
Here is a stamp from Italy issued in 1960 on the occasion of XVII Olympic Games held
at Rome. The stamp featured a beautiful statue of a boxer which was
found in Rome in 1884. It was the work of the sculptor Apollonius and
dates back to the first century B.C. The athlete is shown resting. The
statue reflects the power and strength of the boxer's coarse muscular
body instead of beauty or elegance. The face is fully covered with
several wounds and the ears, nose and lips are deformed.
