Letter to a Grown-Up Child

When you were younger and had much growing to do
We'd wash and clean and cook for you

Those chores kept us busy, we didn't always have time
To play a game with you, or read you a rhyme

You'd ask for a new toy, such as building blocks or a doll
Money wasn't always plenty, we couldn't buy it all

You'd ask to go to the museum, the park, or perhaps the fair
Sometimes we could, but we couldn't always bring you there

Now you are older, and will soon be on your own
Please spare a thought for us, as we'll feel more alone

Time will go fast for you, for us it'll seem still
Our days will get longer and harder to fill

We'll remember your childhood, and wish we could now do
All of those things you asked us to.
