Last week I was here, and carved our names in the sand.
You gaze upon me everyday.
Go ahead.
Laura had just arrived at her dorm room on the third floor of her university, after getting her usual bedtime glass of milk. Although Laura was 19 and living in a college dorm, she still practiced most of the same habits as when she was living at home. She had been stressed out this past week studying for finals, and decided to go to bed early. She climbed onto her cot and feverishly pulled the covers tight around her limp body. She could feel herself sinking deeper into the mattress and into her subconscious.
The Writing Beneath The Waves
It had been a beautiful day, and my heart was drowning with innocence.
Today though, it's a different story, as the tide surges cold and hard against my feet.
And soon, imprints of me become a memory as I am washed away.
I am alone within myself.
Nobody hears me.
Nobody understands.
Everyone just forgot about me, the way the waves forgot about the writing in the sand.
Synthetic Souls
Yet, you remain expressionless.
No feelings.
And always smiling.
No matter what, you smile through it all.
Such a synthetic soul.
I wish you were real.
Can you love a paper doll?
All these faces, yet none would recognize me.
It's as if there's no memory.
Eyes with no light.
Faces frozen in an imaginary world,
With your voice as the only way to reality.
It's so real and genuine,
But to you I realize I will never exist.
The Art of Invisibility
Sit there.
You don't see anything.
That murmur you hear is just the wind.
The heat over there in the corner?
Nah, that's nothing.
Just your imagination.
Come on...
Keep telling this to yourself...
Maybe someday you'll even convince me,
As you so painfully try to do.
I know you well and I watch everything you do,
I hear everything you say and notice every feeling you hide,
And yet, I am nothing.
I am the invisible empty space that's standing beside you, my friend.
Only The Shadow Knows
a short story
Suddenly, with great effort, her eyelids flew open and she shot out of bed, a nervous expression swept over her and spread across her tired, wrung out face like a disease. A whirl of worried emotions drowned her thoughts and overflowed in her, causing beads of perspiration to form on her forehead. She quickly wiped away the sweat. She had forgotten to write out her symposium that was supposed to be expressed extensively for her Literature class the next morning! She had been putting it off for the last minute, so she could study for her tests. At this same, vulnerable moment, a blinding flash of lightning illuminated her entire room, and briefly impaired her eyesight. She crept across the small room to turn on the lights, when something caught her eye. Slowly, she cocked her head enough so that she could make out a dark figure lurking in front of her window. A deep, rumbling crack of thunder shot out, throwing her body in motion. This was followed by more lightning streaks, that penetrated her through the dark figure, who seemed to be towering over her now, and began stabbing at her pupils. Then, everything stopped. The silence in the sudden stillness of the night was deafening. She could sense the icy stares being shot at her from across the room and it made chills run up her spine, yet she could almost feel his hot, heavy breath dampening the hairs on the back of her neck. All her nerves felt numb. She knew he was moving closer! She felt alienated from her body.
Suddenly, her physical shock broke, and she heard wild, hysterical screaming. It startled her so, that she shut her already lowered jaw and at that instant the screaming ceased and she realized it had been her own shrill voice echoing through her temples. She spun around with great agility, ready to eliminate the presence, but the shadowy figure had disappeared from her world, as quickly as it came. She jolted back and flicked the lights on, cautiously checking her window. She could only come up with one conclusion to explain the course of events that had just transpired: There is no way anyone could have gotten in that way, or is there? Maybe she had been studying too hard for finals and it had drained her mind of reality?
