* mike keneally: nonkertompf
(1999, 2cd, us, exowax ex 2403)
Mike Keneally is back. After a couple of albums that, in my
opinion, weren't that convincing, he's back where he belongs (in my
cd-player!). Somehow Mike managed to escape 'his typical sound', resulting
in an excellent album, his 7th one already. Nonkertompf is an instrumental,
very contemporary sounding album, on which Mike plays all the instruments.
The first edition of Nonkertompf had an extra cd called Nonkertalk, on which
Mike explains how the album came about. Appearantly, it's a project he has
had in his head since his childhood. According to Mike, this is the most
personal album he has made to date and that's exactly how it sounds.
Nonkertompf is a great album. Multiple enjoyment garantied.

* a group: volume 1
(1998, cd, bel, via records belgium via 6915012)
* a group: volume 3
(2000, cd, bel, via records belgium viakra 6920022)
I'm catching up with these. Volume 1 is playing right now and
sounds great. I listened to Volume 3 first - all coverversions:
Snakefinger, Beatles, Raymond Scott Project,... fabulous. A Group consists
Pierre Vervloesem, Anne Fontigny, Thierry Mondelaers, Didier Fontaine &
Peter Vermeersch. It sounds like they had a lot of fun recording it. We
want more. Just put these on top of your list!
* frank zappa: the yellow shark outtakes
(1999, cdr)
No label on this one as it is a home-grown cdr. But it is a very
fine one:
'overture / dio fa','food gathering in post industrial
america','amnerica','outrage at valdez pt1',
'outrage at valdez pt2','none of the above (kronos quartet)','none of the
above (synclavier)',
'times beach (aspen wind quintet)','moe's vacation','the black page'.
I don't have the exact dates on all of these recordings, as the disc had no
info on these, but the first ones are from the ensemble modern concert in
amsterdam, the netherlands. anyway, nice selection, nice package.
* the dangerous kitchen: pays tribute to frank zappa
(1998, cd, can, acreq pr-2210-2)
'zomby woof','andy','florentine pogen','peaches en regalia','the black page
(drum solo)','the black page no.1','the black page no.2','inca
roads','drowing witch interlude','envelopes',
'teenage prostitute' (fz)
About two years ago I received two tapes. Those were supposed to be
by a band called ACREQ, the first one was called '2 new hours', from a 1994
canadian radio show that broadcasted a november 1993 concert by ACREQ / The
Dangerous Kitchen; the second one was called 'ACREQ: the dangerous kitchen:
the music of frank zappa', a 1994 concert in houston, texas. I was told
that this band was supposed to have released a cd (someone had seen a review
in a canadian mag somewhere) but no-one (I know) knew anything about it.
Well, here it is: the band is called "The Dangerous Kitchen" and they are
supported by the Association Creation Recherche Electroacoustiques du
Quebec, read ACREQ. I bought this disc from someone in Canada who told me
it's pretty hard to find. Try to get hold of it. The tapes were OK,
although one was a bit out of tune, but the disc is really excellent.
Essential listening.
