    Japanese Episode 34

    Episode Stats:

Japanese Episode 34:  "Garuura no Komoriuta" ("Garura's Lullaby")
American Episode 34:  "The Kangaskhan Kid"
    Pokemon Dare Da?  Garura
Japanese Air Date:  November 18th, 1997
American Air Date:  October 22nd, 1998
Important Characters:  Taasan/Tarou (Tomo/Tommy), Mama & Papa (Mama & Papa)
Important Places:  Safari Zone (Safari Zone)

Satoshi-tachi are now in the Safari Zone, and Satoshi is eager to catch all the pokemon he sees there.  He is stopped by a gun-wielding Officer Junsa who tells him that Satoshi-tachi are in a Pokemon reserve.  Inside her camp, an alarm beeps telling Junsa of a poacher trying to catch pokemon.  It's the Rocket Dan!  They're scoping out a herd of Garura.  Musashi and Kojirou fire a bazooka into the air, which frightens the herd.  The herd is now easily caught in a net.  It seems as though the Rocket Dan have a bunch of new Garura when a boomerang hits Musashi in the head.  It was thrown by Taasan, a feral jungle boy who frees the Garura.  Taasan is able to control the Garura with a shout, so he orders the Garura to attack the Rocket Dan.  They do, and the Rocket Dan go flying.  Taasan leaves with the Garura as a helicopter lands from above.  It's Tarou's mother and father.  They're looking for their child whom they lost five years ago (the father dropped him out of a helicopter!)  They show Junsa a photo of Tarou, and it turns out to be Taasan!  Junsa has his files on record, so he is easily located.  Satoshi and the gang decide to help mama and papa look for their child.

As they're walking (the kids have to carry the lazy parents!) they run into a baby Garura.  It's bruised up a bit, but Takeshi sprays medicine on it to make it heal faster.  Suddenly, a boomerang hits Satoshi in the face!  It's Taasan again, and he thinks they've hurt the Garura.  Then the parents step in, telling him who they are.  They try to tell him of his past, but he insists that the Garura are his parents.  Then Papa hits Taasan on the head, knocking him out! (he wants to start from scratch).  Mama yells "Tarou!  Tarou!" to wake him up, and Taasan recognizes for a brief moment that his Mama is his mother.  Then Junsa drives up, asking for the help of Satoshi-tachi.  The Rocket Dan are at it again, this time with a giant mechanical Garura.  Mushashi pretends to be an injured Garura (by speaking into a voice distoriton machine) which lures the Garura towards them.  Kojirou fires tranquilizer darts at all of the Garura, putting them to sleep.  Taasan sees all the Garura injured and tries to harm the mecha-Garura with his boomerang, but it doesn't work.  Then Junsa drives up with Satoshi-tachi and Satoshi calls out Fushigidane to try tie mecha-Garura up.  Then he calls out Zenigame who attempts to use its headbutt attack while Taasan's hitting the mecha on the head.  Now Satoshi calls on Pikachu and Hitokage and uses their combined electricity and fire attacks to cause the gas tank to explode.  The Rocket Dan's still able to move and are ready to attack the jeep when Taasan's parents, in a helicopter, crash into the mecha causing it to explode.  The Rocket Dan fly away.

Everyone's sad because of Mama's and Papa's sacrifice.  Suddenly Mama and Papa, wearing clothes similar to Taasan's come up from the rubble, saying they'll stay with Taasan in the wild.  Now everyone's happy.  Satoshi and the gang leave the family to catch more pokemon in the Safari Zone.

A brief shot of Kasumi's breasts was cut out after Taasan hits Satoshi with a boomerang.  In the original, the conversation was:

    Taasan:  "Oppai nondii ka?"
    Kasumi:  "Doushite soonaru no?"

Basically Taasan's asking Kasumi of those things on her chests are "oppai" (breasts).  She answers by hitting him and asking how such a young person knows about such things.

In the dub, they changed this dialogue:
    Tomo:  "You people or pokemon?"
Misty:  *Whaps Tomo* "I'm a person ya creep!"

Not quite as funny, ne?  I guess a little boy who hasn't been around women in five years being curious about oppai can't be shown on TV.  Taasan's a lot like Goku, actually...

*While Taasan's remembering his past, we hear a strange noise in the background ("Garuuuuuu~ raaaa~").  It's the Japanese Garura!  For the second episode in a row, 4Kids got lazy and kept the pokemon's Japanese cries.

*Another breast reference, this one more obvious.  Did you wonder why Papa had his shirt open with his chest thrust out as he said "Tommy, my boy, remember Papa?"  It's because in the original, he says:

Papa:  "Papa wo Omoi Dasu no Desutsu"
Kasumi:  *whacks Papa* "Ii Kodakara Papa ha chotto Hikkondete!"

Papa asks if his chest reminds him of his mother (Taasan was most likely breast-fed) to which Kasumi says "That's enough.  Wait a while since he's just a child."  If anyone has a better translation of these lines provided above (mine are extremely rough) please e-mail me.

Pocket Monsters was not created by me.  It was created by Satoshi Tajiri and the crew at TV-Tokyo.  Pokemon is (c) Game Freak, Nintendo, 4Kids Productions, Hasbro, Bandai, and a ton of other companies. When you have a popular anime like Pokemon, lots of people own it so it's impossible to list every company who owns a piece of Pokemon.  No infringement of copyrights is meant by the creation of the web site.  All images were gotten from official websites (Nintendo, TV-Tokyo, etc.) unless otherwise noted (I don't steal images from other sites!).
