(Nintendo 64) Official Super Smash Brothers Website
Released:
A fighting game with Pikachu? Sure! In fact, most if not all of Nintendo's big franchises are represented in this game. In the game, you choose a character and then go into battle, either one-on-one or one against many. The characters are as follows: Mario: From the Super Mario games, duh. He looks strange in this game...he looks better in Super Mario 64. He can do a variety of attacks from his various games (I never got the chance to play as him when I rented the game). Yoshi: Yoshi is the dinosaur Mario has ridden on since Super Mario World. Yoshi come in various colors, each with different abilities (red Yoshi breathe fire, blue Yoshi can fly, etc.). Like in Super Mario World 2, Yoshi uses its long tongue to swallow enemies. Donkey Kong: Donkey Kong is the grandson of the original Donkey Kong who threw barrels at Mario in the original 8-bit Donkey Kong games (for the NES). This Donkey Kong, which debuted in Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, is very powerful but is somewhat slow. Link: From the Legend of Zelda games. Is it me, or does Link look better in Orcarina of Time? He looks freaky in this game...Link has some of the most useful attacks: he has the whirling blade attack, throws a boomerang, tosses bombs, and he uses his Hookshot to draw enemies (like Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat games). Samus Aran: From the Metroid games (they're really underated). This is her first appearance on the N64 (and Nintendo STILL hasn't released Metroid 64...). She rolls up into a ball and releases a bomb, charges up her highly-powerful gun-arm, and has an energy-whip similar to Link's Hookshot. Kirby: Kirby made his debut on the Game Boy in the very short Kirby's Dreamland in the early 90's. Kirby is a little puff ball thingee who swallows his enemies and then gains their powers. Fox McCloud: Fox McCloud first showed up in Star Fox for the SNES, the first SNES game to use the special FX chip. Fox McCloud is a pilot who is a bit of a loner. He uses his guns to attack. Pikachu: The entire reason this game is showcased on this site! Pikachu uses its electric attacks to beat its enemies. I didn't think it had very good attacks (it has an akward thunder bolt and an easier to use but weak thunder shock) and its character model looks a bit on the chubby side, but it's still cute. Purin: Purin is the first of four hidden characters who is in the game just to be cute. Really, it doesn't have very many decent attacks. It can sing and fall asleep in the middle of battle (what kind of attack is that?!) and that's about it. Captain Falcon: Captain Falcon is the guy from F-Zero 64 (and maybe the original SNES F-Zero). Why he's in this game I don't know. Ness: Ness is the little boy from Earthbound (Mother 2) for the SNES. I really don't know much about him since I haven't played that game (I need to, though...). Earthbound 64/Mother 3 is still being made by Nintendo (don't they EVER finish games?). Luigi: Mario's brother. He's pretty much the same as Mario.
With characters like these, the game can't be like a normal fighting game. It isn't. For those of you who watch Dragon Ball, you could compare this game to the Tenka-Ichi Budokai. Basically, you either a) try to beat your opponent(s) senseless, or b) try to knock them off the arena (all the battle areas are suspended high in the air). With the first option, every time you hit an enemy, it's percent thingee at the bottom goes up. If it gets up to a certain number, it'll be knocked out. The second option is the easier and most entertaining. The enemies are trying to do the same to you so you've got to watch out because you WILL fall off a lot. So suppose you get knocked off. You're falling, and it seems like you're done for. Don't worry, because every character has the freakish ability to leap in midair. And they leap very high. So you can fall, then as you plummet towards the earth, hit the jump button (any of the C buttons) and gain enough momentum to get you back to the battle field. Each character has a certain number of lives, so you can fall off multiple times before you're done for good. And even if you do, you are given an endless ammount of continues. The opponents the computer pairs you up with are odd. First you fight Link, then a Yoshi Team (a group of 18 Yoshi who attack three at a time until all 18 are done for), then Fox McCloud, then the Mario Brothers (Mario and Luigi), etc. You'll fight a giant Donkey Kong, a group of close to thirty "Polygon Fighters" (don't ask), and finally, a giant hand. But don't worry, you'll get help. In some battles, you'll be given an ally or two to help you out. But in all battles, you'll be given items which you can use. A sword falls from the sky and you can use it to bash you foes. If a Monster Ball falls from the sky, you can throw it at your foe and then watch a pokemon come out and attack it (so far I've seen Onidrill, Fushigibana, Pippi, Nyasu, Porigon, Lucky, Hitokage, Tosakinto, Sawamuraa, and Kamex). If a Paper Fan falls from the sky, whack people with it (saying "Lekka Shien" is optional ^^;;). These items are more powerful than your regular attacks and can help weak characters like Purin. It's kind of weird to see Pikachu use a gun or a sword, but that's the way the game is. ![]() ![]() ![]() The backdrops for each character are very nice. Link's arena is the roof of Hyrule Castle. Fox McCloud's is on top of a ship. Pikachu's is in Yamabuki City (Saffron City) on top of the Silph building. Each area has a bunch of platforms, so you'll be jumping around a lot. The music for each area is great. Mario's music is the classic Mario music from Super Mario Bros. 1. Link's music is from the early Zelda games, which was sorely missed in the Orcarina of Time. Overall, the game's very fun. I definitely recommend buying it.
In the US, the game came out with so-so sales. Then after everyone
started to watch Pokemon, they re-released the game. Now guess what
happened? The game's selling very well! Funny what a little
yellow mouse can do...BTW, I love the commercial for the game in the US.

Pocket Monsters was not created by me. It was created by Satoshi Tajiri and the crew at TV-Tokyo. Pokemon is (c) Game Freak, Nintendo, 4Kids Productions, Hasbro, Bandai, and a ton of other companies. When you have a popular anime like Pokemon, lots of people own it so it's impossible to list every company who owns a piece of Pokemon. No infringement of copyrights is meant by the creation of the web site. All images were gotten from official websites (Nintendo, TV-Tokyo, etc.) unless otherwise noted (I don't steal images from other sites!). |
