    Pokemon Yellow
    (Game Boy)

    Released:
    Japan:  September 12th, 1998
    USA:  September 1999

Pokemon Yellow is an enhanced version of Red/Blue/Green.  It's been enhanced to be more like the popular anime series.  For instance, you get Pikachu as your starter pokemon instead of choosing between Hitokage, Zenigame, and Fushigidane.  It follows you around (it won't stay in its Monster Ball) like in the anime.  Musashi and Kojirou are in the game, making their first (and so far only) video game appearance.  Like the other versions, there are some pokemon you can't find in Yellow.  They are Arbo, Arbok, Dogasu, Matadogasu, Nyasu, Persian (apparently so you can't have the same pokemon the Rocket-Dan use), Biidle, Kokuun, Spear, Rujyura, Elebuu, and Buubaa.

What else is new?  There's a spiffy new intro which ends with Pikachu saying "Pikachu!"  That's right, Nintendo somehow managed to include digitized speech into this Game Boy game.  Pikachu says various things during the game, from its mad "Pika!" to it's happy "Pipika!"  In addition, the Pikachu that walks around with you acts like a Pocket Pikachu, being happy if it's used often in battle and angry if you neglect it.

Then there's the little touches.  Joi and Junsa appear as themselves.  Joi runs the Pokemon center with her Lucky while Junsa gives you a Zenigame she found with the Zenigame-Gundan.  Yes, all three starter pokemon can be gotten without having to trade for them because people give them to you throughout the game.  In addition, popular pokemon like Purin appear more...Purin-like.  There's also a mini-game called Pikachu Surfing, but you must have a special pokemon ("Surfing Pikachu") which can only be won through Nintendo contests or on their Pokemon tours (kind of like Myuu).  Then you could do it the easy way (with Pokemon Stadium 2)...

The game is enhanced by Game Boy Color.  It's not completely in color, but has the Super Game Boy pallet.  That means all the pokemon are the colors they should be, instead of them all being red (like earlier versions).

All in all, there's enough differences in this game to go out to get it.  If you only get one version of "classic" Pokemon, get Yellow.

Pocket Monsters was not created by me.  It was created by Satoshi Tajiri and the crew at TV-Tokyo.  Pokemon is (c) Game Freak, Nintendo, 4Kids Productions, Hasbro, Bandai, and a ton of other companies. When you have a popular anime like Pokemon, lots of people own it so it's impossible to list every company who owns a piece of Pokemon.  No infringement of copyrights is meant by the creation of the web site.  All images were gotten from official websites (Nintendo, TV-Tokyo, etc.) unless otherwise noted (I don't steal images from other sites!).
