As fans were baffled over another sequel, It was described by Wes (creator of A Nightmare on Elm Street) as not a sequel. It was about real life and the behind the scenes look of the Nightmare stars and their lives. It starts out that Heather Langenkamp (who played Nancy Thompson) is having dreams about Freddy. Not the movie version, but a more evil, darker Freddy. She receives mail and phone calls by him giving her more then she can handle. She had a dream about her doing another film and that Freddy killed her husband's co-workers (Chuck and Terry). She even recieved a offer from Bob Shaye to do another film because of her obsessive stalkings and her son was having bad episodes about the Freddy Krueger character. It had gotten so bad that Heather called her husband (Chase Porter) to come home; however on the way home Freddy got a hold of him causing a car accident. At the funeral, family and the entire original Nightmare crew (except for Johnny Depp) attended the funeral. She talked it out with friend John Saxon who played her father in the Nightmare movies. It seemed as they kept it to themselves, the crew themselves were developing nightmares about Freddy: Robert Englund, Bob Shaye and even the creator himself, Wes Craven.
As the episodes got worse with her son Dylan she took him to a hospital to run tests. Then she visited Wes who was writing and directing this movie. Wes told Heather that he was a ancient evil that existed in during the beginning of time and the only way it can be captured is by making another film. Heather also went home to read about child sleeping disorders, to try to figure a pattern about what is going on. Then things started to happen as the TV turned on and a new anchor talked about the death of people working on the latest Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Then a earthquake hit as Freddy attacked Heather. Heather survived as Freddy stopped attacking after a second earthquake. Heather rushed to the hospital to see Dylan. Julie, a friend of the family was there also to see Dylan. Questions plagued Heather about her sanity. In the past, a family member suffered from mental illness and they beleived that all the Freddy talk was in her head. As that was going on, Julie was with Dylan playing a game as two nurses tried putting Dylan to sleep. Julie fought the nurses and lead them to the door as she locked it. Freddy then appeared and killed Julie dragging her bloody body all over the wall (like Tina in the original). Heather finds out and Dylan is then missing.
As Heather took a long hard journey back home, John Saxon was there acting out his old role as Lt. Thompson. Freddy was playing a game and Heather played along. As they walked outside she was back on Elm Street were she would battle Freddy one last time. She found Dylan by a track of sleeping pills. Heather entered Freddy's evil empire one last time. She barely rescued Dylan, and they locked Freddy in his own boiler when it exploded. As Heather made it to the real world, they see the script by the bed of the movie they had just lived. They read as a happy ending fades to black.
Freddy's best quote of the movie: "Miss Me?"
- The movie was inspired by Wes as Heather was being stalked in real life because of a obsessive fan blaming her for the cancelling of the T.V. show "Just the Ten of Us".
- New Nightmare was written to be based more on Heather then a Freddy story.
- The original title for New Nightmare was "A Nightmare on Elm Street 7: The Ascension".
