Witchcraft for Beginners: Part 2
Types of Witches
What's with all these different types of witches?
Well like everything the one major classification can be broken down into several smaller ones to better define it. A witch is simply someone that practices witchcraft. Now if you want to better describe which of the many types of witchcraft you do most of the time you should look into all the different types of witches out there. I will give you a few of the more prominent ones in this article for you to read over and help you understand better.
The first type that I have run across most is a white witch. Now MOST witches I've come across hate defining magick as white or black. I'd really like to see this type of witch being called a Neutral Witch or something like that. But for the sake of teaching so that all can understand this I will refer to them as white witches. Now a white witch is one that will follow "And harm ye none, do what thou will". They also take karma and the three-fold law very seriously. They only do spells, rituals and magick that will do go for other people and try to stay away from spells that are for personal gain. A white witch is normally a peaceful person that takes great pleasure in the world around them always wanting to help out anyone/thing in need. They heal, protect, help, and divinate. Most will also be Wiccan. You can also run across TONS of people claiming to be white witches but don’t know anything about witchcraft. Make sure you read up on the other types of witches so you are dubbed fluffy (basically knows nothing and is just in it to say there a witch).
As sure as there are white witches there will be black witches. Again I hate defining magick as white and black but also for the sake of teaching again I will leave it at black witch. Black witches are the more carefree then the white witch. They usually do NOT care about the three-fold law, and in some cases the witches don't believe in it, same thing applies to Karma for them. They either do not fear it or believe it does not exist. It all depends on your personal belief. Black witches do not follow the Wiccan rede. They do all sorts of spells. Their specialties however lie in curses, hexes, binding, personal gain spells, sex magick and all things that a white witch would NEVER touch. They are not bad people just don't do anything wrong to them or make them mad or they will deal with you however they see fit. These types of witches are usually very knowledgeable in a few different types of magickal religions such as Voodoo, and even possible Satanism as well as the other types of witches.
In addition there is also Eclectic Witches. This is my type of witch. An eclectic witch is often referred to as a dabbler. They do everything from what is commonly dubbed as white to black magick. There is no real set path or tradition for them, instead they select individual elements from a variety of sources or types of witchcraft and use them as their own. These types of witches take on anything that they believe in and feel is right to them. So no two eclectic witches are exactly alike. I tend to think of them as snowflakes. One may take on certain parts of the Wiccan rede while another will hate it. Some believe in karma while others do not. So this is more of a person piecing together there own style of witchcraft. They are usually very knowledgeable about a lot of different religions not just magickal ones.
I my opinion those three are the main types of witches out there. Don't get me wrong there is several other types out there not just those three. Here are a few more.
Kitchen Witch: They practice by home and hearth, mainly dealing with practical sides of the religion, magick, the elements and the earth.
Ceremonial Witch: Mainly uses ceremonial magick (obviously) in their practices. They commonly use Qabbalistic magick or Egyptian magick in their rituals.
Celtic Witch: Goes by the elements, the Ancient Ones and nature. They are usually healers or respect them highly. They work with plants, stones, flowers, trees, the elemental people, the gnomes and the fairies.
Solitary Witch: This is one who practices alone, without a coven following any tradition. This is a lot like an eclectic witch.
Straega Witches: Witches that originally come from Italy or those that follow Italian witchcraft. . It is said their craft is wise and beautiful.
Hereditary Witch: Someone who has been taught the 'Old Religion' through the generations of his or her family. Usually raised as a witch.
Pictish Witch: It's originally from Scotland and is a solitary form of The Craft. It is more magickal in nature than it is in religion
I'm sure there is many more out there but these are just a few of them. There are tons more out there waiting to be discovered all you have to do is want to learn about them. The learning does not stop here there are tons more things to learn besides the different types of witches out there. So I encourage everyone to go exploring and see what he or she can find.
