What We Do
The Welcome Aboard Meeting is the considered the first meeting of the year for the CGSAA. This event is held on the second Tuesday during the month of September and is an opportunity to meet new families and friends and learn what the CGSAA does. The evening is filled with door prizes, games, laughter and friendship. The leaders of the CGSAA are introduced and a calendar of events is available for the year. This is one meeting you should not miss!
The Back-to-School Ice Cream Social is held a few days before the school year begins at USCG Housing. The club serves free popcorn and ice cream to everyone! An assortment of school supplies may also be distributed kids in attendance along with drawings for grand prizes. Special guests from the community also attend, including law enforcement and fire personnel to discuss safety issues with the children.
The CGSAA, in conjunction with Clatsop Community Action (CCA), assembles and distributes Thanksgiving baskets to families who are in need in the local community. Canned food and monetary donations are collected from local businesses, USCG units, the CG Exchange, and local residents of Astoria and surrounding communities. Members of the club help in so many ways, from working with area schools' canned food drives, transporting food donations, to assembling baskets. In recent years, the CGSAA has provided over 400 plus baskets for the local community!
The CGSAA organizes an Easter Egg Hunt (rain or shine) on a Saturday near Easter at the USCG Air Station/Group Astoria's picnic shelter. Scheduled events may include an Easter Egg Hunt with separate age groups, Bunny Hop Sack Races, Jumping Contest, Egg Roll, Egg Carrying Contest, Cake Walk, and a visit with the Easter Bunny!
The CGSAA hosts a Children's Halloween Party in the USCG Air Station/Group Astoria's gymnasium during the month of October. The CGSAA organizes a party complete with games and crafts while the MWR officer organizes trick-or-treating around the base. Kids go home with plenty of treats!
A holiday party is held in the hangar at the Air Station during a Saturday afternoon in the month of December. The highlight of the event is the arrival of Santa Claus via helicopter! All children are invited to talk to Santas and have their picture taken. Mrs. Claus and Santa's elves have been known to have a toy for each child! The afternoon is filled with games, crafts, raffles and door prizes! The MWR Officer provides food and refreshments for all.
