The Buzz

Arthur Dent

Well, Terra Nova, it has been quite a week. After considerable planning, we released the first issue of The Subterranean, and what an adventure it was. Although we now recognize that we did not get the full story regarding Mrs. Ramos and the luncheon (only what was the full story at the time of printing), we are quite pleased with your response to this periodical. First, however, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the readers of this underground "rag" and to share some of the speculation and feedback that we've either heard directly, been told by others, or received via email.

Ahh, the big questions: Who are we? How many of us are there? We've heard all kinds of answers to these questions with several names bandied about. Nils Palsson's name came up more than once, and rumor has it that our fine campus supervisors were on a mad hunt to find him last Thursday to no avail. He was apparently found Friday morning, but nothing seemed to come of his visit "downstairs" because he's still walking among us. Sky Corbelli, Nicolette DeLouche, and Brooks Parvin have also been implicated as possible contributors. We can neither confirm nor deny that any of the four participated in this enterprise, just as we can neither confirm nor deny that the paper has been entirely student-driven. Members of the school community were overheard speculating about which teacher (if any) might have been dare-devilish enough to participate in such a risky undertaking as telling the truth in print. Mr. Napoli's name came up once or twice, as did Mr. Littrell's, Mrs. Jenkins's, Mr. Schneider's, and Mr. Minshew's. Again, we can neither confirm nor deny these reports, but should any teacher choose to submit an article, we would happily consider it for publication. Our favorite overheard comment went something like this: "Have you seen this [paper]? It's brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!" …to which we say: thanks!

We've received some interesting email, as well. Here is a sampling (see the back page for two poems which were also received via email):

From "Anonymous":
- "Who ever this is, I just want to say this underground thing is the best thing to hit TN in a while. It's about time we have had the truth told. Congrats on it, and I really hope to see many ones to follow. I look forward to reading them from here on out."

- Thank you!

From "SenorZorro2000@aol.com":
- "Whoever wrote those articles in the paper's first edition certainly knows what he or she is doing. Quality stuff. Real professional. Much more interesting and provocative than what the school's official paper prints…You could also try promoting the need for administration-ignored establishments such as the Breakers, an extremely talented group of breakdancers who were not present at the first rally, or the Improvisation Comedy Club (Improv for short), a club that has plenty of brilliant performers but lacks an audience of more than two at any given time… I would be honored to help you guys out as part of the paper's staff, should you require my services."

- Thanks for the feedback. If you have any articles, etc., please submit them for consideration to TheSubterraneanTN@yahoo.com. And good point: where were the Breakers at the first rally? What about the BSU dancers? Also, I've never been to an Improv meeting; are they announced in the bulletin? Oh, wait…that might make the bulletin too long.

From "Kellie":
- "First I have to give you (I can't think of a good phrase) major props for getting people to read the paper. No one in the school really likes the [official school] paper unless they are in…boring classes. So good job! Well with all good news, there is bad news...I'm sure you have heard "you didn't know all the facts" from people in leadership about the senior spending article. Well, I will not say it was wrong...it was your opinion...and obviously you do not know Mrs. Ramos! She is a very hard person to argue with and she was just trying to give them a surprise. Okay, so we have to sell 5 more See's Candy boxes…So what! Get over it! It's not the end of the world, the class is not poor, and prom tickets will not go up due to $128! Now that's my opinion! …PS. Did you really have to use people's names?"

- Regarding the lunch situation, we did overhear that we "didn't know all the facts" from a couple of members of Leadership, although no one bothered to email. Please see "Follow-up" for a conclusion to the lunch saga. Thanks for the "props"; we value your opinion.

Concerns abound regarding our choice to remain anonymous. Why do we have the right to print the names of others while we ourselves remain safely hidden behind pseudonyms? The fact of the matter is that if we published our real names, we would be immediately targeted and then prohibited from telling the truth. Unfortunately, telling the whole truth without using the real names of others is impossible -- and while the truth is not always kind, it is what it is. We appreciate the concern that we are being hypocritical by remaining anonymous, but we respectfully submit that it is our anonymity which allows us to best serve the interest of improving the school and holding the community accountable for its actions. If there is a problem with what is published, the Subterranean Staff urges its readers to call us on it. All arguments are welcome, even from the Terra Nova staff! The closest thing to criticism we received via email was the letter from Kellie. Please continue to send in your comments, concerns, cartoons, questions, RandomRants, poems, nominations for "Loser of the Week" and for the all-new "Kudos of the Week". And keep in mind, friends, that this paper is here for you, not for the personal gratification of the handful of us involved in its publication.
