THE TIME: Past the year 2000, yet too close to be a long time from now.

THE SETTING: A world which has changed for the worse. A place where the rich have most of the power and wealth and the rest of society just gets lower and lower in a whirlpool of endless debt.

THE SPORT: A simple, primitive urge for the basics of life-blood, death, {conqueration}, triumph over another. Things that the high life can not offer, but money can. The purchasing of the poor for a blood sport of street fighting. But it was not enough for the rich to pay and watch boxers to duke it out in some ring. The feelings just weren't enough past a point. And so through the "miracle" of science, the ability to link fighters with hosts was born. But even that was not enough for the "high society people" who sponsored the project. So they stopped going to the boxing rings and took to looking at the poor population to do their "virtual fighting experience" for them. After all, for the right price, anyone can be bought.
Through the linkup of surgery implants and special 3-D Fighter Terminals, the business men in their offices got their fighting experiences without getting "down and dirty" with the "Street Grunge". Not to mention all the wagering that was placed on these fights. The big stakes amongst all the millionaires and such. Fixing fights was considered a FoPa due to the nature of this illegal sport-A Fight to the Death. However, the costs of training a new fighter for each match up was too expensive, even for millionaires. So, every well trained fighter has an equally trained medical staff standing nearby to rehabilitate after death has occurred. Making for a very convenient "Fight and Fight Again" situation.
A good question would by why would anyone want to fight a fight to the death? Simple answer, for the money. Any fighter who can win a match can easily earn thousands of dollars for a minute's work. And when there is so little way to earn an honest buck in an upper class world who would sooner shoot the un-needed as breath, how could a break such as this possibly be turned down. A real chance to pull up from the gutter that life handed out.
