"Even our Failures are Edible" is the motto for Johnny's Po-Boys. The quaint little shop in the middle of downtown Gretna serves some of the best if not the best Po-Boys in town. For anyone who is unfamiliar with a Po-boy, it is a sandwich made with French Bread, meat, and whatever dressings you want on top. In New Orleans, people could live on these sandwiches. Johnny's have been making these great sandwiches for years.
I think that my all time favorite is the Fried Shrimp. The shrimp are fried to order then piled inside the two pieces of bread. There are many of places around town who serve this dish, but Johnny's does it the best. The shrimp are never soggy and are always hot. If you like oysters, they also make a great sandwich.
Johnny's has a list of Specialty Po-Boys. My favorite on that list is the Italian Combo. This is Meatballs, Italian Sausage, Provolone Cheese, and Tomato Sauce(Red Gravy). The first time I had this combination was at R&O Pizza in Bucktown. I though that they had the best sandwich around. Until I tried the one at Johnny's. This is a sandwich not too be missed. If you don't like Italian Sausage, try the Meatball Extravaganza. It is the same wonderful sandwich without the Sausage.
There are so many sandwiches to choose from: The Italian Sausage, Roast Beef, Griilled Ham, Grilled Pastrami just to name a few. One of the strangest sandwiches is the French Fried Potato Sandwich. This is a Sandwich made with French Fries and topped with a homemade Beef Gravy. This is a wonderful sandwich which is very hard to find these days. Most places refuse to make it.
Every day Johnny's offers Hot Plate Lunch Specials. Traditional Red Beans & Rice on Monday, Fried Seafood on Fridays, Chicken different ways each day. These are served vegetables or salads. These plates are good but it is hard for me to not order a sandwich.
Johnny's does serve Breakfast, mostly to the city workers and people with the courthouse. He offers all of the traditional breakfast items: Biscuits, Toast, Grits, Hash Browns, Hot Cakes, French Toast, Eggs. All of these items are good.
Make sure you get to lunch early. The small restaurant fills up quickly. But you can always take your food to go.
Make an effort to get to Johnny's. No where will you find better Sandwiches. |
