Fire Safety Equipment

Call 911 or activate a Fire Pull Station immediately in the event of any fire - large or small.

While every effort has been made to ensure an effective response to fires in your apartment, the safest bet is to prevent fires. Use care when cooking, and never leave anything cooking unattended. Do not overload plugs with electrical appliances. Do not burn anything in your apartment, not even candles or incense.

Fire Alarm

Your apartment has multiple fire alarms inside - they are usually red boxes on the wall. Evacuate Immediately if the alarms in your apartment begin sounding. While false alams may occur occasionally, you have no way of knowing a false alarm from a true emergency - not even after you get outside. Come outside and wait for the Fire Department to say all is clear to go back in. Do not cover the alarms or remove them from the wall.

Smoke Detectors

Occasionaly, minor smoke from cooking or from turning your heater on for the first time of the season will set your smoke detectors off. If this happens, simply open some windows, turn on the fans, or wave a towel in front of the detector - it will stop when the smoke dissipates. Your smoke detectors are connected to and are powered from the building fire detection system, but they do have a 9 volt battery inside as a backup. When the battery runs low, your detector will 'chirp' at regular intervals, indicating the battery needs to be replaced. When this happens, you can call maintenance, or you can replace it yourself with a new 9 volt battery. It is also recommended that you test your smoke detectors on a monthly basis by pushing the button on the front. If it fails to activate after you have held the button down for a few seconds, please enter a maintenance request immediately.

Under no circumstances should you disconnect the smoke detector from the wall. Doing so disconnects it from the building fire detection system and places you and your neighbors in danger. Additionally, you should never cover the smoke detector, as this inhibits its ability to detect a true fire.

Fire Suppression Sprinklers

In your ceiling, throughout your apartment, you will notice sprinkler heads. Once activated (by heat or by physical disturbance), they will discharge water at a rate of approximately 60 gallons per minute. It is imperative that you do not hang anything (such as clothes hangars) from the sprinkler heads, or throw anything in your apartment which may hit a sprinkler head. Anything which physically disturbs the plug inside will result in a discharge. If your sprinklers are discharged due to your negligence, you may be held financially liable for all water damage and clean-up costs, and your renter's insurance may not cover your posessions.

Fire Extinguisher

Call 911 or activate a Fire Pull Station immediately in the event of any fire - even if you feel you can battle it with your fire extinguisher.

If you need to use your fire extinguisher, you will need to unclip the metal strap holding it to the wall in your kitchen, pull the pin in the handle, point the hose at the flame, and squeeze the handle. Please familiarize yourself with this procedure before you need to do it, as the stress of a fire can easily make anyone forget. (Hint: when practicing - DO NOT actually pull the pin or squeeze the handle!)

Also, your fire extinguisher's pressure is checked by maintenance regularly. If the gauge on your fire extinguisher ever reads outside of the green 'normal' pressure range - either high or low - please put in a maintenance request immediately.

Fire Pull Stations

Pull stations are located either in your apartment entry way or in the hallway outside. In the event of an actual fire, pull the station immediately. While the fire detection system in the building will register the fire, you can often give the Fire Department a few additional seconds which may be crucial to successfully fighting a fire.
