![]() |
"In the United
States alone, it is estimated that more than seventy million (70,000,000)
animals are used annually in research, and that
one animal dies every three seconds, often in pain and fear." - Jane

How to Find Your Animal Totem?
An Animal Totem is an important symbolic object used by a person to get in touch with specific qualities found within an animal which the person needs, connects with, or feels a deep affinity toward.
You can have several animal guides through out your life. Sometimes an animal guide will come into your life for a short period of time, and then be replaced by another depending on the journey or direction you are headed toward. Your guide will instruct and protect you as you learn how to navigate through your spiritual and physical life. When you find an animal that speaks strongly to you or feel you must draw more deeply into your life, you might fill your environment with images of the animal to let the animal know it's welcome in your space. Animal guides can help you get back to your Earthly roots, and reconnect with nature by reminding you that we are all

WHAT IS AN ANIMAL TOTEM?
Many cultures believe that
humans can work in cooperation with animal spirits for healing, wisdom, and
insight. In earlier days we understood that we were simply a part of the earth.
We knew we were only one small part. Now many think humans are the greatest and
most important part. But still, we are only a part of the earth, only a part of
nature, only a child of Mother, only a part of Spirit. We used to know respect
of Nature and killed only what we ate and used only the skins of what we killed
and ate. We did not waste lives nor disrespect spirits but honored and thanked
them for providing us with life, nourishment, and comfort. In earlier days we
gave recognition to the power of the animal spirits by wearing skins, masks,
mimicking, singing praise, and prayer to specific animals. We painted the
animals on our homes, caves, death chambers, and asked the Spirit to guide us to
the animal that we consumed and bless the spirit of the animal we kill for we
are a predator in the part of Nature and we honored the spirit of our prey.
These acts allowed us to remain linked to the animal guides and to accept the
power they offer us in lessons, in life, and in death. It reminded us that all
animals were our sisters, brothers, and cousins and most importantly our
teachers and our friends. It reminded us that we too are animals with spirit.
The Natural Power of animal totems has not been lost. They still hold the power
and the knowledge we can use. Only we must remember how to be One with Nature
and all that is, has been, and will be. Cultures of the past understood the
connections. We must not lose this connection now that we are 'cultured'. For
what was will always be and all those cultures could not have been wrong. There
is a reason that Spirit has put all of us together, has given us so many healing
stones, and has given us medicine, for the body and the spirit. We are all one.
Using Animal Totems will allow you to see and love the earth better, to know
life better, to know yourself better, and to commune better with Mother and
Spirit. You can be healthier and happier physically, mentally, emotionally, and
spiritually in understanding and honoring your animal totems.
Animals come to us because they have a lesson we need to learn a power they are
willing to share with a friend. In general, animals remind us that we are part
of the earth; that each creature has a place; that each creature has a skill of
it's own; that we have instincts given to us from Mother, wisdom born to us that
we must awaken. The Animal Totem that comes to you offers you power and wisdom
if you will learn to communicate with it, with respect, trust, and
understanding. Developing a relationship with a live animal totem takes time,
practice, and patience and could be very dangerous. Having an animal totem does
not mean that you are to pet the animal or even be with it physically. Having an
animal totem means that you have lessons to learn and a powerful
spiritual
friend.
Each animal has it's own special power and message, for each animal has a
powerful spirit and an inherent skill. Animal Spirits choose a person to be a
companion to, a friend to, not the other way around. You cannot think, “gee a
bear is cute or powerful and I like what it represents so the Bear will be my
Animal Totem”. No, the animal will choose you and make itself known to you. You
will only need to pay attention to discover what your totems are. Mistakenly
people often think of animals as non-spiritual, uncultured, and less intelligent
than humans. Animals also mirror your subconscious beliefs and patterns.
They remind you to connect with your own inner, instinctual nature. If you are
drawn to certain animals at certain times in your life, consider them to be
messengers from Spirit. See what the animal symbolizes and learn how that might
apply to your life.

NATIVE AMERICAN ANIMAL HOROSCOPE
Many Native American cultures have myths and legends where animals are
the main characters or play an important role in teaching the younger generation
important
life lessons. Some of these cultures have created a belief system, or zodiac,
based on animal guides.
The horoscopes on this page are based on Native American beliefs. Due to the
number of indigenous tribes, who do not all have the same beliefs, we have
selected some of the more widely accepted zodiacs and totems.

THE NINE
TOTEMS
Each person has nine animal essences or
totems that walk through life with them,
teaching and guiding them and in some cases, protecting them.
These animals are found in 7 directions around your spirit:
East, South, West, North, Above, Below and Within.
The last two animals are walking beside you at all times;
your Right Side (male) and your Left Side (feminine).
While sometimes the live animal is with you, often times
they are not -- your totems are animal essences or spirits --
not necessarily the live animal.
The South totem protects the
child within and reminds you when to be humble
and when to trust. It also helps heal your inner child.
The West totem leads on your
path to personal truths and inner answers.
It shows you the path to your goals.
The North totem gives wise
counsel and when to speak and when to listen.
It also reminds you to be grateful for each blessing each day.
The Above totem is the guardian
of the Dreamtime
and gives you access to other realms and dimensions.
The Below totem shows you how
to stay
on your life path and how to stay grounded to Mother Earth.
The Within totem in the
protector of your sacred space.
It teaches you how to find your life's joy.
The Right totem protects your
Male side
and it is your Father protector. This animal carries your courage and warrior
spirit.
The Left totem protects your
Female side
and teaches you how to nurture yourself and about relationships and mothering
Totem Animals of the Medicine
Wheel
Ancient Native Americans believed
that all animals had lessons to teach and had healing or inspirational power to
give. When they held or carried a certain item, or meditated on it's meaning,
they believed they drew the
special energy of the animal into themselves.
Just like everything else within my "VAMPYRESS' GRIMOIRE and BOOK of SHADOWS",
Color Magick, the different animals listed below have different correspondences,
and can be invoked for many different things.
A totem is a guide. This guide leads us as we travel, in this world as well as the Otherworld. You do not choose your totem, it chooses you. You can follow them while on your journey down the path that will lead you to enlightenment and self- fulfillment. They guide us even in our dreams. Your primary totem is the one that comes to you when you need comfort and strength. 1. Life Totem
Your Life Long Animal
Totem works with you throughout your entire life. Always there when you need
it's powers. Always reminding you of your power and connectivity. You may have
only one or a few Life totems. They may become your Life totem at any time. Your
Life Totem is always there for you and generally reflects your inner spiritual
nature.
Discover Your Animal Totem by answering these questions:
Life Long Animal Totems
When you were a child, what animal did you collect or obsess over that you are still attracted to today?
Of all animals if you could have any animal as a pet or companion what would it be?
When going to the zoo, which animal do you spend the most time with or are drawn to?
If you could be any animal what animal would it be?
What animal is in your dreams that you have had since childhood?
What animal are you afraid of that you have no idea why you are afraid of it?
Of all animals what animals are you most attracted to?
When you are out in nature, do you often seem to run into the same animal?
What animal have you bumped into over and over throughout your life?
What animal have you watched for hours?
Does art work or jewelry with a certain animal always attract you?
You Life Long Animal Totem will be the animal that you answered at least three times out of the eleven questions. The more time the same animal is listed in your answered the more important and stronger it is in your life.
This is the Totem Role that we will begin with, as most individuals who have studied Native Astrology are already familiar with this particular Role. It is the Animal Totem most often equated with the Sun Sign in traditional, exoteric astrology.
Each of the individual
Birth Totems will also belong to one of the four Elemental Clans, as
delineated on the Clan Totem page.
Where the ~Birth
Totem~ is the chief Teacher we have chosen to "study under" this Earth
Walk, the ~Power Totem~ is the most basic and eternal expression of our
Soul.
In addition to the
"generalized" Totems of Birth and Clan, which cover a group of
people born under a certain day and month, there are several other
Animal Totems that will figure strongly in our lives as we walk the
good Red Road of Physical Life. One such of these Totem Roles is
the Life Theme Totem.
Just as the Life
Theme Animal Spirit is only with us for the current earth walk, the
same holds true for our ~Life Mission Totem, with he/she possessing
the Wisdom and Medicine that will assist us in fulfilling our chosen
Life Mission.
As we enter onto
the Sacred Hoop, we choose the general Path, Theme and Mission of
our current Earth walk. Additionally, we will chose the major and
minor lessons that our soul will encounter so that it may evolve and
move beyond the "need" to take up the ~Robe of Physical Life.~
2. Journey Totem
A Journey Animal Totem reflects a period of time. Not just a day but weeks,
months, or maybe a year - the time it takes you to walk the path that the
Animal Totem is reminding or guiding you on. During this journey you will find
that this animal is always showing up in your life or that several animal totems
will appear in your life all to guide you on the path. When you find two or
three animals all of a sudden making an appearance and their nature all has the
same basis then you have found the basis of your path. The difference between
the Journey Animal Totem and the Message Animal Totem is a period of time.
Journey Animal Totems
If you have a Journey Animal Totem you will have answered at least two of the questions with the same animal. Blessings on your new path.
3.
Message/Messenger Totem
A Message
animal Totem will bring itself to you quickly and impartially where a Journey
Animal Totem will slip in and out of your life over the course of a period. A
Message Animal Totem usually is bringing you a self growth or spiritual message
- like a wake up call or slap in the face.. It will usually be a very unusual
experience making it very powerful at that time, with great impact.
In addition to the Animal Totems that we have either for the current Earth walk
(as in the Birth, Theme and Mission Totems), the Animal Spirit that is with us
from lifetime to lifetime (Power Totem), and the Lesson Totems (which change
within the current incarnation), there are also Spirit Totems that hover at the
edge of our consciousness, acting as emissaries between the Blue Road of Spirit
and the Red Road of Physical Life.
Message/Messenger Animal Totems
If you only answered one question then this is a message you should consider. If you answered the same animal to two question then this animal is your Message Totem with a very important message. Heed it's word quickly for the message is for now and today.
4. SHADOW
TOTEM
A Shadow Animal Totem are those totems that test
us. They have great powerful us but will put us through tests before they will
let their power work with and for us, instead of against us. In all of nature
there is prey and predator. In the spiritual or Shadow World there is the same.
A Shadow Animal Totem is one that initially you fear. The Shadow Totem often
represents inner fears that you must overcome. You may have even been attracted
by the animal; a very vivid test to see if you are ready to accept the power of
the animal totem. Until you face the fears of the Shadow Animal Totem it's
powers will work against you, not letting you soar high. When you overcome the
fear of the Shadow Animal Totem you
bring it into the Light World as your Spirit
animal totem and they become one of your most powerful Animal
Totems.
The Shadow Totem is the Animal
Spirit that brings forth unresolved issues for resolving, unhealed pain that it
may be healed, and the Personality Center operating from destructive tendencies
that we might absorb and integrate the Lessons of the Past.
Shadow Animal Totems
Answering two questions with the same animal means you have a Shadow Totem you must address. Remember that the Shadow Totem will continually test you and work against you for you are it's prey. You must embrace the lesson of the animal totem and conquer your fear, accept the power of the Shadow totem, and bring it into the light as your spiritual totem
What animal do you connect with?
When you go to the zoo, which animal do you visit first or spend the most
time watching?
Do you look like an animal?
Have you ever been bitten or attacked by an animal?
Which animal frightens you?
What animal(s) do you see most frequently when you are out in nature?
Have you had encounters with animals in the wild?
What animals visit you in your Dreams or Meditative state?
Aardvark:
When one of these "living fossils" appears in your life, it's time to explore
your personal mythology.
Albatross:
Ask for help to boost you into flight to a better feeling. You mate for life.
Alligators/Crocodiles:
Creation/destruction, birth/death,
beginning of a new period and the death of the old, knowledge is transformed by
a new level of growth, hidden wisdom awaits. Aggression, survival, adaptability
Anhinga:
You easily get bogged down in the stuff of daily life. It's necessary to
be in the sun to revitalize your energy.
Antelope:
Heightened psychic ability, may need to insulate yourself or come out of hiding,
adaptability, strong sense of smell, new opportunities can be seen. Your going
to encounter someone who is graceful and nice looking. This person could
become a romantic partner. Rapid advancement is guaranteed. Antelope is quick to bound into action. If there is an area in your life
where you need to act and take that leap of faith, just do it! Or maybe your
thoughts are leaping about like antelopes being stalked by a predator. If so,
calm down, be still, and look before you leap
Ants:
Sense of community, social structures, industriousness. Group minded,
perseverance, step by step. The ant represents self discipline and a group
effort. Teamwork. Imagine how hard the ant
must work to bring rocks up out of the anthill and food back down. Patience,
teamwork, and cooperation are required. We can use those qualities as well! If
something you want has not yet arrived in your life, be patient! It will arrive
at a time that is in the highest good for all concerned. Get some rocks from
around the edge of an anthill and put them in your pocket for patience
Armadillo:
Protection and how to use it, sensitivity to others attacks either real or
imagined, learn to trust what you feel with others, new birth coming -shows how
to deal with it. Armadillo with its
tough shell and ability to roll up in a little ball teaches us to honor our own
boundaries. Boundaries are not meant to keep love out of our lives but rather to
protect our gentle and loving nature from the attacks of those who are still
motivated by fear. If you know emotionally toxic people don't judge them, but by
all means use healthy boundaries
Ass:
Patience, humility, wisdom to know when to use
it, outer recognition of inner potentials, move with the flow, don't be content
and complacent, enjoy the road to the goal.
Badger
Keeper of stories, aggressiveness, bold self expression, passion, cunning,
control, perseverance, grounded, knowledge of earth, earth magick and wisdom.
write things down, sees beneath the surface of all things and people, including
herbs and roots, chances to develop self expression and reliance, new chapter in
your life. If he draws your attention maybe there is an
area in your life where you need to be more assertive. Maybe you need to apply
personal willpower to motivate yourself or you are being asked to be a spiritual
warrior in order to push past the boundaries of your own fears
Bat
Initiation, Rebirth, Changes, Blessings, Trust, Instincts, Perspective. Guardian
of the night, cleaner. Bat goes
into the cave each day which symbolizes a return to the womb. He emerges each
night symbolizing the constant cycles of "death and rebirth" in our lives. If
you are attracted to bat you may be going through a major life transition or
perhaps some old and useless beliefs are finally shifting out of your life.
Remember that your intentions send energy out into the world (like sonar) and
information will bounce back to guide you towards these intents
Bear
Introspection, Power, Prophecy, Intuition, Sovereignty, Instinct,
Transformation, Strength, Courage, Stamina, Harmony, Healing, Visions,
Leadership. The bear is the
keeper of sleep, dreams, and inner wisdom. He goes into the cave and comes out
renewed. There are times in life when we must go within to reassess our lives.
If you are in a period of transition you may want to go into hibernation. You
may want to sleep more, be less social, and less focused on your goals. This is
normal. If you are in this period of life, draw on the strength of bear to know
that everything has its season and that a time for action will come once again.
For now, rest is in order. Bear is also the healer and herbalist. His curious
nature motivates him to learn a great deal about the plants and their medicines.
Invoke him for his healing, his powers of introspection, and his wisdom.
Beaver
Teaches lessons of breath for health, emotions, builder of dreams, teamwork,
time of action to build upon those long awaited dreams, may mean to go forth
with plans. The busy beaver works with the other members of his

devotion and strength. Tigers also have a strong connection to full and new
moons as well.
Wolf:
Intuition, Learning, Shadow, Guardianship, Ritual, Loyalty, Spirit, Magick,
Dreams, Meditation, Wisdom, Pathfinder, Teacher, Friendship, Trust. Loyalty,
success, perseverance, earth wisdom, protection, stability and thought. Wolves
are also regarded as pathfinders and teachers. Wolf is represented by the
constellation Sirius, the Dog. In the Zuni tradition the Wolf symbolizes the
direction East. Wolf is the pathfinder and teacher who is not afraid to go off
and explore the many trails in the forest before coming back to share its
adventures with the pack. At times we must honor our need for solitude. Then we
come back to our friends and families wiser and ready to share. Experience life
first, then teach. This is, in fact, true wisdom

Cunning (can be a trickster). Inner vision. Able to see and face challenges with
clarity. Invisibility. Able to shape shift realities

digging into something, the art of discrimination and increased analysis. it
also has a peculiar way of flying with a rhythm and manner unique to itself. all
this serves to say, be conscious of flying to your own rhythm, and don't be
afraid to dig in to make the best choice for what is right for you, sometimes it
also means you need to drum up a little change and get some renewed rhythm!
Knowledge of personal truth. Inner strength. Mentally strong
Zebra:

realities. Hidden knowledge

White Buffalo
Lesson: Truth
Element: Water
Wind: North, The Elders
Medicine: To Cross between ~Planes
White Buffalo is the Totem for one whose Life Path is to awaken the Soul of Others. Yet in order that she might fulfill this role, she need first to find the Light Within herself, to integrate the Mind, Personality, Emotion and Soul.
This is not an "easy" incarnation, as the process of divining ones own Light is an intensive undertaking that is achieved through a combination of life experience, acknowledgment and integration.
Yet the Light Within will illuminate the process of Discovery and lead him to the Doorway Between Planes, the Gate where the Blue Road and the Red Road intersect.
When he has attained true Integration,
the LIght he brings will be seen by All who are willing to learn of the Light
within themselves in the splendid dance of the Awakening Soul.
When Great Spirit moved Its Creative Force across the expanse of the Earth Mother, a Doorway was left between the Blue Road of Spirit and the Red Road of Physical Life. And yet there remained a chasm between Planes that the two-legged found difficult to cross, so Great Spirit called upon White Buffalo that she fashion a Bridge to link the Two Planes together.
She stood on the precipice of the mighty chasm and contemplated the task she had been given. For some time, she pondered the space between worlds and wondered how she would manage to bridge that distance. Then, a great calm settled over her Being, as she laid her body down only to discover that her back legs touched the Plane of Physical Life, and her mighty head rested upon the golden shores of the Blue Road.
***One who is blessed to have White Buffalo walk beside them, is aware of a "higher purpose" to Life. It is as though they can hear the call of Great Spirit in the secret language of the Oak trees as the wind whispers its path along its branches and leaves, sees the Chasm between Planes in the reflection of the setting sun upon the oceans shimmering surface, and feels the rhythm of Great Mystery in the beating of an eagles wings.
This soul has been gifted the blessing of White Buffalo Totem through his actions of Selflessness in previous incarnations . . . in his ability to integrate the many aspects of his Self into One in the current life as he seeks Truth and Understanding.
Yet with the Blessing comes also Responsibility, for the commitment is to Build the Bridge Between Planes so that Others might also cross.
This will manifest as one who will link
understanding between different nations, creeds, religions and beliefs that
currently separate their fellow two-legged in the ultimate understanding of the
Truth, that the many, are in truth, One.
It is said that part of the reason White Buffalo is white, is because she cannot speak any untruths, her spirit blessed in the Waters of Truth and Honesty which in turn turns her hide white.
One with White Buffalo Totem is a soul that is based concretely in Truth, in the belief, adherence to, and upholding of, Truth in all of it's wondrous forms. Consequently, she will always seek to operate from nothing less than Truth, though this is of course a gradual process, given our Physical Personalities and experiences along the Red Road.
First, Truth is merely spoken as a child, free of editing. Yet, as the child grows and matures, he observes that being direct and honest is not always favored by adults, since the things he may sometimes say seem to elicit a strong reaction, or even pain in others.
Though one who is blessed with White
Buffalo will always come back to Truth as the cornerstone of their Belief
System, and will live by a strict code of Honesty. Perhaps this is why, when
Truth is not honored by Others, White Buffalo Soul may have moments of sadness
for the dousing of the Light of Honesty Within. Then he will raise his head
once more to Light and Beauty of Great Mystery and resume his Path of Truth.
White Buffalo is an Elder Spirit amongst the Animal Totems, for she was with Wakan Tanka at the creating of Earth Mother and placed in the West to hold back the tides.
Her Wisdom is forged in watching, ever vigilant, the progression of the two-legged. She observes, understanding the pain the people experience while in the flesh, yet also witnessing the beauty of their souls as they unfold in Conscious Awareness of their Life in Physical.
***One with Buffalo Totem is generally not given the gift as the Power Totem, yet inherits the gift both through previous lifetimes spent in service to their fellow Two-Legged, and in the current lifetime through continual study, learning, and conscious growth.
As this is a Totem with tremendous responsibility, she will be drawn to an "Elder Soul," one who has walked many times around the Sacred Hoop of Life. She will walk with one who is focused upon the complete integration of Self, as only once one has integrated all parts of the Whole within themselves, may they then seek to Unite others both to themselves, and to one another.
Herein lies the challenge, as the Path for White Buffalo is never smooth, yet riddled with pebbles, boulders and divided at times by raging rivers. Yet through Trust in his Path and Soul's Purpose, Faith in Great Mystery that all will be exactly as it is meant to be, and Love for All, any challenge that presents itself will always be acknowledged, embraced and absorbed, leading him to the Light streaming from the Gateway where he may then lay himself down to fashion the bridge so that others might make the journey across

Bat Animal Totem, or Spirit Guide, represents Transition and Rebirth. A Bat animal totem appearing in your life is a call for the end of a way of life and the beginning of another.
With Bat as an animal totem, you must face your greatest fears and get rid of the part of your life that no longer is needed. This transition is very frightening for many. But you will not grow spiritually until the old parts are gone. Face the darkness before you and you will find the light in rebirth.
Ancient Cultures lived within nature and revered every plant and animal as part of the Great Spirit. Feathers and skins were used as totems; items that imbued the wearer with the character of the animal. By wearing these totems, we enhance and bring out these qualities in ourselves.
