What is the reason for Candle Magick?  

Candle Magick is both a psychic and psychological experience used however you want.  Each person should have their own reasons.  Mine? you ask!  I like the different ways it effects me, through touch, smell and sight.  To look at a burning flame your mind wanders to the ends of the earth and back.  The touch of hot wax on your flesh also gets a rise out of me.  Lastly, the smell, depending on what I choose that night, can be subdued or nightmarish. One of the most easiest arts of natural magick is candle magick. It is easy because it uses little ritual and few ceremonial tools. I have complete control of my own candle magick and that is why I developed this page, to help you understand!

COLOR SYMBOLISM (in choosing your candles):
A color of a candle is like a key that unlocks a certain area of your sub-conscious mind and being.  The actual symbolization of each color will be found to differ with authority, tradition, or school of thought, so keep in mind the final analysis, the only actual true authority for YOU is Yourself! Color contains an important part of magick making and each color has its own magickal meaning! Color can stimulate the power within. Using colored candles, Incense (view my INCENSE MAGICK Page) and oils aid in enhancing the overall effect of the magick ritual.

BLACK:  Absorption and destruction of negative energy; opens up the deeper levels of the unconscious; reversing, uncrossing, binding negative forces, discord, protection, releasing, shape shifting, repel dark magic and negative thought forms. Attracts Saturn energy.

A new candle must be used for each new spell.  The candle must not be cracked, broken or damaged in any way.  Make sure you have time when you plan to do your candle magick, because the candle must be allowed to burn out on it's own and you should never leave a candle burning unattended!

FLAME ACTIVITY

• Strong Flame: the power that you call forth is moving into your desires to manifest. This strong flame indicates that there is strength to your work and to user of the object being the candle.
• Weak Flame: On a candle of figure the subject is losing the battle,& isn't a positive result. On a candle of tapered can be sign of facing opposition and you may wish to reset your workings.
• Jumping Flame: this can indicate explosions of energy being transmitted, raw emotions are attached to this one, could be argument s battle of wills around the corner, as could mean your intention s are not positive or haven t been fully examined, you may wish to stop there and take good hard look to make certain of being centered and focused. Negative energies may be present also.
• Northern Movement: can indicate physical presence manifesting, you will be able to work for that which you seek, this is well established in this.
• Eastern Movement: something of more meaningful nature is at work, something of troubled nature also could be manifesting, you may wish to give deep thought to thing s in your life before reacting upon them, examine motive well at this time.
• Southern Movement: short and intense is indicated here as something fast moving is manifesting will not last long but will bring in success rapidly and with intense result.

How to "CHARGE", and OILS for CANDLE "CHARGING":
In a candle spell, we first charge the candle (or empower it), directing our own energy into the candle. This, like raising our energy before the spell, is very necessary. Without charging, the candle basically has no power to bring you what you need. This energy we direct into the candle is then released when the candle burns, going into the world to create the change we desire. While charging a candle for a spell,  anoint the candle at the same time. Anointing is simply rubbing oil (Oil section),  on the candle, intending to help direct  energy into the candle. When performing a spell to attract something, or performing a positive spell of any kind, the candle is held between the index finger and thumb of your receptive hand (the hand you DON'T write with), and oil is rubbed on the candle from the tip to the center- and then from the bottom to the center with the finger and thumb of your projective hand (the hand you DO write with). The candle is never rubbed back and forth. By rubbing inward from the tip and inward from the bottom, we are "drawing" our intended goal to us.
To charge a candle for a spell to banish or dispel negativity of any kind,  anoint the candle from the center outward. Hold the candle with the index finger and thumb of your receptive hand and rub the oil on with your projective hand- from the center to the tip, and from the center to the bottom. Again, never rub back and forth. Make sure to check the MOON phase before working any spell.  
When using oils, make sure they are not synthetic but pure in form.  I am listing a few of my favorite oils and there uses in magick!

While anointing the candle, focus on the goal of your spell. Then imagine sending the energy you raised into the candle,  flowing from your body and out your finger tips. To make herbed candles, crush the chosen herbs into small pieces and place the powdery mixture onto a paper towel. Apply oil to the candle and roll the oiled candle in the herb mixture. Here are the signs when watching the candle's smoke:

1. Northern Movement  - Something physical is manifesting.  You will have to work for what you wish to achieve.

2. Eastern Movement -  Something mental is manifesting.  Think things through and have patience in situations.

3. Southern Movement  - Something intense and short lived is manifesting. Success comes rapidly and with intensity.

4. Western Movement  - The manifestation of strong Magic intervention.  The issue is too emotional.  You are too involved - step away for a time. Clear your thoughts.

The size and shape of the candles you use is unimportant, although highly decorative, extra large, or unusually shaped candles will not be suitable as these may create distractions when the magician wants to concentrate on the important work in hand. Most magicians prefer to use candles of standard or uniform size if possible. Those which are sold in different colors for domestic use are ideal. The different types of candles purchased today are great.  There are Astral and Alter candles, and Voodoo and Novelty candles.  I will explain my favorite candle types and give you a idea of what candle is right for you.

ALTAR CANDLES:  
*These are usually taller and longer burning than the other candles used plus these are lit first and extinguished last. One to the left (female energies) and one the right (male energies) represent Deities. Gold for male and silver for female.
- Cruciform candles - these are very popullar, they should give you spiritual security
- 7 day glass enclosed candle - for rituall use
- 14 day glass enclosed candle - for alterr use (lasts longer)
               * When choosing a glass enclosed candle, the color of the glass should be selected symbolically according to one's needs*

ASTRAL CANDLES:

Devil Candle -  devil candles are used when working with the spirits of darkness.  black devil candles are used for destruction and red candles are for dominating and individual.
Crucifix Candle - crucifix candles are used for spiritual altars.  White crucifix candles are used for spiritual protection; Red crucifix are used for love spells; green crucifix candles are used for prosperity and to open up the roads. Black crucifix candles are used for divine justice.

TWO COLORED CANDLES:
Double action candles are two-color candles, the lower half almost always black, and the upper half either white, red or green. The symbology is that the combination of color repels the bad influences and at the same time draws the good vibrations.
*The black half usually burns first, to free you from the negative influences, then the colored half will burn afterwards to fill the space created with the positive energies you seek.

QUESTIONS ASKED and EXTRA ADVICE FROM VAMPYRESS

Why did my Candle Explode?
There are two different ways to interpret this. If it is a protection or reversing candle it means that the candle protected something from attacking you and/or a lot of negative energy has been directed towards you. If the candle is being used to dominate or cause conflict to someone, it means that the person is being protected spiritually. If this is the case ,you are to light another candle of the same type to break their protection to allow the spell to work correctly.

What does it mean if my Candle does NOT Burn?
If the candle is a prosperity or protection candle, this means that other type of spiritual cleansing must be done before the beginning of this spell to remove the negativity of the environment before proceeding. If the candle is being used for domination of to inflict harm then another type of spell must be used.

Why does my  Candle have a HIGH FLAME?
The spell is going to be effective and work fast. If for prosperity or protection, the environment is clear of negativity. If for domination and harm, you will most likely see quick results as they do not have spiritual protection . A candle with a tall straight flame indicates the arrival of a stranger. The candle is working by sending out a large amount of power & strength to manifest your desire. This indicates that your prayer will be answered rapidly.

Why does my  Candle have a LOW FLAME?
In regards to prosperity and  luck, cleanse your environment.  In regards to domination and harm, they are resisting due to a strong spirit and it will be awhile before you see results. It is suggested that you try another spell in combination with the present one to see faster results. The candle is working slowly to remove an obstacle or to bring about positive vibrations. You will have to pray a bit longer and harder to overcome some opposition.

Why does the Candle burn the Glass Totally BLACK?
If after the candle burns down the entire glass is black, it is thought to mean that negativity or witchcraft has been directed towards you. Cleansing your environment and lighting a reversing candle should do the trick. If this happens when burning a candle to dominate or harm someone they suggest stopping because it may possibly turned back on you. Serious obstacles stand in your way and more work, including uncrossing and negativity removing, needs to be done by a practitioner of your faith.

Why is the Candle burning  the TOP Half of the Glass BLACK?
If only the top part of the glass burns black this means that the spell was initially met with negativity before it began to work. Someone is working against you with the darker the blackening, the stronger the opposition you are facing. he suggest you think positive and persevere.

What if the Candle Burns the BOTTOM Half of the Glass BLACK? 
If it is a candle for prosperity or luck, negativity was sent your way and the candle detected it. If used to dominate or harm, the spirit of the person was alerted and reversed the spell.

What if the Candle burns only on ONE SIDE?
This means that the spell will only be part way effective. This means that the wrong candle or candle dressing was used.

What does it mean when the GLASS CRACKS?
If being used for self-protection, this means that the candle broke the negativity in the environment. This can also mean witchcraft or the presence of secret enemies. If being used to dominate ,it means the protection of the individual was broken. If the glass breaks this can depend on what type of work is being done. If an uncrossing , this is good because it indicates that the spell placed upon you or the individual you are petitioning for has been broken. If this happens to candles being used for other reasons it can mean that there is strong pressure from someone working against you.

IF THE SMOKE WAFTS TOWARDS YOU:
Your prayer has been acknowledged and will be granted quickly.

IF THE CANDLE SMOKE WAFTS AWAY FROM YOU:
Perseverance will be needed to achieve your desire.

You are becoming too emotionally involved with the situation and are in danger of subconsciously sabotaging yourself so that your prayer will not be answered.

Why does my candle have more than one flame?
The center or main flame represents you. If being used for protection each one other than the center one represents an enemy. If being used to dominate, it means that the person is being helped by other people.

Why is my candle flickering? 
When a candle flame flickers, this signifies the presence of spirits.

Why is my entire top of the candle including the wick  on fire?
This means that the spell is being fought off by guardian spirits but more than likely, the spell will be successful.

Why did my  candle flame go out during the spell?
If the spell is for protection this means that while the job was being performed, witchcraft was directed your way and your spirits were unable to fight it off. If directed towards another ,their spirits were able to fight the attack off & have alarmed the individual. Another type of spell must be performed.

Can a candle be extinguished and then lit again later?
Only a candle being used to bring prosperity or success to an individual may be extinguished before it has completely burned. If being used to dominate or harm someone, the candle flame must never be put out or the spell will not work. The guardian spirits of the other individual will then have time to prepare and reverse it back on to you.

What if a candle is extinguished and then relights itself?
This means that your guardian spirits do not want you to turn the candle off because they are detecting something good or bad for you. If the candle is turned off they cannot assist you effectively.

What if a 7 day candle burn out before seven days?
This means that the spell is working fast and another candle must be lit immediately. Money is coming in regards to prosperity spells,  a lot of negativity in regards to reversing spells and in spells of harm, that the individuals spirit is fighting it off but it will soon be successful.

What will make a candle spell work more effectively?

Lighting and Extinguishing of Candles
It is best to light a taper then to light the candles on the Alter from this, in order of you ritual.  At the close of your ritual you may blow out the flames (in reverse order to that of lighting) or you can put them out with a candle snuffer.  NEVER PINCH THEM OUT WITH YOUR FINGERS. Placing a plate over the flame thus allowing the flame to extinguish itself naturally or use a candle snuffer.

Why use a VIRGIN CANDLE?
The candles you use of any type of magical use should be virgin, that is unused. Under no circumstances use a candle which has already adorned a dinner table or been used as a bedroom candle or night-light. There is a very good occult reason for not using anything but virgin materials in magic. Vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and negate their effectiveness.

Why does the CANDLE FLAME CRACKLE? 
It is also possible that the candle flame may jump or crackle during a spell. If you are summoning entities, the flame may grow to as much as six inches in height when they manifest, or make a crackling, popping sound. In regular candle spells a crackling, jumping flame generally implies that a lot of energy is being generated due to high emotions or the effects of the spell. It is generally a good sign that the magic is working. Note which candle in the altar setup is crackling and go on with the ritual.  If for self-protection it means that someone is talking about you and has bad intentions directed towards you. If being used to harm, it means the individual is thinking about you.

Why does the Candle Emit BLACK SMOKE when lit?
This signals that the candle is beginning to remove negative energy from your desire.

Why does the Candle Emit WHITE  SMOKE when lit?
This signals that your prayer will be answered but not without a struggle.

Why does the CANDLE FLAME look like a Rainbow?  
If your flame is composed of various colors, the elemental is communicating with respect to the colour codes. Meaning that the energies are so strong that the corresponding colour on the spectrum is manifesting in the Salamander (the flame).

NEVER use MATCHES...THEY ARE TABOO. Why?
They are tipped with phosphorous and sulphur (Brimstone), elements which release noxious fumes when ignited, are used in the Black Arts to invoke demonic entities.  Striking matches to light candles which have been blessed and charged would therefore seem hopeless.

Why is the CANDLE FLAME STRONG or WEAK? 
A particularly strong flame means that power is being generated toward manifesting your intent. If a candle used to represent a person is particularly strong it can imply their dominance in the situation, their higher energy level, they are winning the situation, or anger and strong emotions on their part. A particularly weak flame shows that there is strong opposition to the manifestation of your intent and the spell may need to be repeated. If a persons candle is weak it may mean that they are in a submissive position in the situation, that they are losing, they have a lower energy level, or that they are in a weaker emotional position.

Why is the CANDLE FLAME JUMPING?
This can indicate explosions or bursts of energy being transmitted.  Raw emotions or chaotic energies could be at work.  An argument could be taking place or a heated discussion. Spiritual warfare may be occurring on your behalf. If the candle is a war-type candle, the person you are trying to affect is fighting back.

WHY DOES CANDLE MAGICK WORK?
As a candle burns it releases not only it's wax but it's color into the atmosphere. What ever has been connected with the candle as in the form of embedded energy or written on the candle will transmigrate to a plane where it can do what you have intended and focused on it to do.
A candle, like everything else used for a magickal purpose, has to be consecrated. Use the general consecration for candles. They are creatures of Fire or of Art. Make sure to check the Moon phase before working any spell.  The phase of the Moon (Click HERE for my MOON Page) will greatly affect the outcome of your spell.
After consecration a candle must be dressed. This consists of anointing the candle with a special oil (choose from above) you have chosen for the purpose in mind. There are many other things you can do to embed a candle to your purpose. You can etch runes in it; a name on it; a purpose for it to perform.. Really the list is endless.

For those who wish to study and use ceromancy, which is divination from forms produced by dropping melted wax in water, it is simple and fun for anyone. Use any color candle (see above for colors), though the darker hues will show up best. It takes only a bit of imagination on the part of the magician to "see" the images which emerge from a bit of hot wax allowed to drop into a bowl of cold water.
