Next we pick up the thread of Thomas and Mary’s son Thomas. It was around 1813 that Thomas married Elizabeth Haught, the woman that would bear him twenty-one children in time. He first appeared in the tax records of German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1815. His occupation was that of blacksmith, and he was taxed for two cattle at that time.

By some great stroke of genealogical luck (ours, not theirs), Thomas and Elizabeth were poor, at least by the government’s standards. Provisions were made by the county to school the poor children, and these children were listed in the tax records. This was the first clue I had to the names of many of Thomas and Elizabeth’s children, and their approximate birthdates. Through these records, we learn of Peter (1815), Jacob (1816), Mary (1817), Jeremiah (our next in line--1818 or 1819), Enoch (1819), Martha Madgalene (1821), David (1822), James Wilson (1823), Thomas (1825), Elizabeth J. and Martha Ann (twins in 1826), and Louisa (1827).

Unfortunately for us, Thomas suddenly acquired 82 acres of land in 1835. No doubt the county deemed him free from poverty, and his children were no longer supported or enumerated. However, in the 1850 census of Auburn Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, there are other children: William (1828), Simon (1836), Sarah (1838), and Emily (1839). Emily was the first child born in Ohio, which sets the time of migration between 1838-1839.

I obtained a copy of the Hilyard family Bible, which shows that there were a total of 21 children born to Thomas and Elizabeth. After this phenomenal accomplishment, Elizabeth expired on March 3, 1850. She was laid to rest in Mericle Cemetery in Fairfield County.

Before the federal census in 1850, Thomas had remarried to what appears to be a widow with several small children. Her name is not clearly written, but seemed to me to be "Alles". She was born circa 1806 in New York. Not only are Thomas and Elizabeth’s younger children living with them, but also M. E. (female age 9) and C. L. (male age 5) Wise. There are also a Joseph (age 4) and Alcinda (age 2) Lockard. These are all probably Alles’s children from possibly two previous marriages. Thomas died shortly after this, in 1855.

Thomas Hilyard was born 12 Jul 1789 in Pennsylvania, probably in Fayette County. He died about 1855 in Fairfield County, OH. His wife was Elizabeth Haught, the daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Croushour Haught. Since their first child was born in October of 1813, Thomas and Elizabeth were probably married in 1812 or early 1813.
