CHARLES ROBERT STEPHENS, baritone   Reviews

Charles Robert Stephens has received critical acclaim throughout the US on his interpretations of the operas of Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti and Rossini. His most recent success has been in the title role in Rigoletto, Amonasro in Aida (both in El Paso), Marcello in La Boheme and Germont in La Traviata (both with the New York City Opera). In the French repertoire he had a resounding success as Valentin in Faust with Pro Opera Montevideo (Uruguay) and as the High Priest in Samson and Delilah with the Palm Beach Opera. His Mozart has pleased audiences from Arizona to New Jersey, having sung the Count in The Marriage of Figaro and Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte. He has also sung leading roles in the verismo operas of Mascagni and the roles of Tonio and Silvio in Pagliacci. Other title roles have been that of the Barber of Seville (Hawaii and Mobile) and Gianni Schicchi (Buffalo).

Mr. Stephens has gained a reputation of being a sincere interpreter of the texts, having sung most of the major oratorios for over 20 years throughout the country. Some concert highlights include Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer in South America, Messiah with the Colorado Symphony, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at New York’s Lincoln Center, Handel’s Samson with the Maryland Handel Festival, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass at Carnegie Hall, and Carmina Burana with the Hartford Symphony. He has appeared in over 150 community concerts in the US, Canada, France, Uruguay, and Russia.

Mr. Stephens is a grantee of the Sullivan Foundation, and a finalist in the Washington International Competition and the Zachary Auditions. He is a Liederkranz Competition winner, where he sang Scarpia, Silvio and Don Giovanni. He received his training at the University of Connecticut, Boston University, Goldovsky Opera Institute, the Santa Fe Opera, and OMTI.

In addition to his stage career, Mr. Stephens’ voice has been heard in many television commercials, including those for the Olive Garden restaurants. He is a high-rise resident of New York City, where he lives with his wife, soprano Deborah Stephens, and their two small children, Madeleine and Christopher.

MAXWELL LI, tenor  Reviews

Mr. Li debuted the role of Radames in Hong Kong in 1997. A native of Shanghai, Mr. Li's extraordinary voice gained him a place in the winner's circle of the Luciano Pavarotti International Vocal Competition in Philadelphia. So impressed was Pavarotti with his voice that he asked Mr. Li to rehearse the orchestra in his place and then offered him the opportunity to understudy Pavarotti's next role. Noted for his distinctive lyric voice, dramatic in quality with an attractive dark timbre, Mr. Li has performed principal roles in Turandot, La Boheme, Carmen, Lucia Di Lamermoor, Cavalleria Rusticana, Nabucco and Un Ball In Maschera. Mr. Li made his European debut with Teatro Lirico d'Europa touring France, Germany and Spain, and as a busy recitalist, he has given numerous concerts in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, and with the New York City Opera. Mr. Li performed in Lincoln Center at Alice Tully Hall in the winners' concert of the International Vocal Competition of the Licia Albanese/Puccini Foundation. His other awards include winner of The Opera Index Voice Competition and winner of The MacAllister Awards Competition. In addition, Mr. Li has been involved with the Opera Music Theater International Program in Newark under the direction of Jerome Hines, who praised Mr. Li's strong, musical voice and his Italianate technique.

MICHAEL MORIZIO Reviews

Mr. Morizio has appeared as guest artist with a number of opera companies and orchestras throughout New England. He appearead regularly with the Opera Company of Boston under Sarah Caldwell, where he sang roles in Tales of Hoffmann, Madam Butterfly, Tosca and La Boheme.

Mr. Morizio has sung major roles in productions with the Boston Lyric Opera, Providence Opera Theater, Opera New England, Merrimack Lyric Opera, Boston Pro Arte Orchestra, Bel Canto Opera of Providence, Raylynmor Opera Company and Longwood Opera. Mr. Morizio made his European debut in Rome in 1994 in an acclaimed performance of the title role in Don Giovanni. In addition to his work in opera, Mr. Morizio has an extensive repertoire in oratorio, musical theater and concert literature. He was a finalist in the New England regional auditions of the Metropolitan Opera National Council, a first place winner at the National Association of Teachers of Singing in the New England regional auditions and a finalist in the Providence Opera Theater Vocal Competitions.

AARON BORST Reviews

Mr. Borst, when formerly with the New England Conservatory Opera Theatre, sang in Gianni Schicchi, La Cambiale di Matrimonio, The Merry Wives of Windsor and in Nino Rota's The Straw Hat. He performed the role of jailer in Boston Lyric Opera's 1996 production of Tosca, and sang the Sacristan in Tosca with Opera North. He was an apprentice in 1994 at Tanglewood Music Center and in 1996 at Des Moins Metro Opera. The past two summers he was a studio artist with Central City Opera. He has performed previously with the Boston Bel Canto Opera as Oroveso in Norma and, most recently, in their May concert in Boston.

ERIC JORDAN

Mr. Jordan was a finalist in the 1998 New England Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions and won second prize in the 1997 Boston Bel Canto Opera Competition. He was a member of the New England Conservatory Opera Theatre where he sang Sarastro in The Magic Flute and Simone in Gianni Schicchi. This summer he was an apprentice with Central City Opera as Bartolo in The Barber of Seville and Francis Nurse in The Crucible.

BARBARA QUINTILIANI

Ms. Quintiliani won second prize in the 1998 Northeast Regional metropolitan Opera auditions and was a finalist in the 1997 Boston Bel Canto Opera competition. She made her debut in 1996 with Virginia Opera and was a finalist in the DiAngelo Internaional Competition. Formerly a member of the New England Conservatory opera workshop, she will be performing the role of Annina in La Traviata with Boston Lyric Opera this fall.

JOSEPH HOLMES

Mr. Holmes is a senior at Wakefield High School where he has sung leading roles in The Music Man, No, No, Nanette and Guys and Dolls. In 1996 he participated in the All-State Chorus of Eastern Massachusetts and was selected for the "house quartet" of finest singers.  He is a member of the BBCO chorus and its student training program. His repertoire includes Alfredo in Die Fledermaus, Rudolfo in La Boheme and Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, the role of his 1996 operatic debut.
