most used word these days. In Latin, "millei" means thousand and annum means year.

WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING LATELY . . .

Report of the 39th Meeting

Current Issue Topic: GUEST Ms. Mukai introduced this timely topic.

Most computers using a two digit numbers for year, when in year 2000, some of them
perhaps recognize 2000 as 1900. We can assume the problems of electric appliances,
computer systems of insurance companies / local governments, public transportation
systems, etc. TM Tsukada who is working on a computer company explained the
expecting problems plainly. And he told that his company is preparing for that problem by
changing the LSI's programming system. Most members are not familiar with these kind
of topics, so we got somewhat relieved by his arrival to the meeitng.

Speech Session: Today's speech are only by guests. Mr. Wennberg and Mr. Uraguchi.
First speaker Mr. Wennberg told his opinion regarding capital punishment.
In the world, there're two major opinions for this topic, agreement or disagreement. He also
said democratic countries disagree it, and non-democratic countries tend to agree it to the
contrary. Supreme court gave a death penalty for committing a murder now somewhere in
the world.
He's hoping that next century will be a peaceful society without violence and death
penalty.

Second speaker Mr. Uraguchi who is working at the Hokkaido Institute of Public Health
introduced his research topic while comparing to our everyday life here.
He's now researching about read fox. In these 20 years, RED FOX living in Sapporo
increased. Even in residential district, they appear sometimes. There's no fox in Sapporo 20
years ago. That institute began field survey on 1989 by counting the carcases of foxes. At
first there're only 25 foxes living. But now there're 88 foxes. Some of the foxes have parasite
and causes to human in any case. We tend to say "co-habitation", but it's difficult to carry it
out. Even in the botanical garden fox can appear.

"Table Topic Session: TM Konishi chaired this session.
"Comments to TM Mr. and Mrs. Higuchi"

They're going to move to Houston for medical research. So the members said comments to
them. This is a good chance to brush up the skills and good opportunity to living abroad.
Ms. Higuchi's great energy always cheered the members and we'll miss her. Her positive
attitude will leads to success for the every aspect of her life. We leaned from her a lot.
Thank you! She's going to take TESL (Teaching English As a Second Language) at
Houston University. Mr. Higuchi belonged this club for several month. Every time he comes,
he came by bike even in the snowy weather. He is a naturalist typed person and his unique
character is a treasure to all of us.
They'll go back after three years; TM Tsukada promised that he'll be the president of this
club after three years by making lots of practices.
Hope their blight future!
