Lord Sri Krishna

Lord Krishna, the one with the flute, here seen with his girlfriend Radha.

God On a Mission

Lord Krishna is one of the most important avatars of Lord Vishnu. He descended to Earth to bring the teaching of the bhagavad Gita, and the less well known Uddhava Gita, and to relieve the Burden of the Earth Goddess of too many warriors on the planet by being a catalyst of the Mahabharata wars.

Early Years Herding Cattle

In his early years he lived in the forest of Vrindavana in a small village as a cow herd boy, in hiding from the demon Kamsa who tried to have him killed numerous times, always failing till it was time for Krishna to kill him. His childhood was a time for many spiritual pastimes which were rife with esoteric spiritual meaning. He and his brother Balarama, also an aspect of Vishnu, killed many demons and had many adventures.

The All Attractive God

He was a master flirt and was lusted after by all the young girls (which is spiritually symbolic of the devotee longing for connection with God) of the village. One in particular was very special to him, Radha. Radha is considered his consort, and thus his shakti. In deity form he is generally shown playing a flute, which he uses to seduce all beings. His name itself means "All Attractive".

God of the Bhagavad Gita

Later on Krishna and his brother moved to Mathura, leaving Vrindavana and all those living there. In Mathura he took up the life of a king, and married tens of thousands of women. He drove the chariot of Arjuna during the battle Kurukshetra during the Mahabharata wars. Right before the battle was to begin Krishna explained the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.
