Measuring Humidity

A humid day can affect the behavior of cats or animals in the same way as a humid day can affect humans. Humidity is a term used to describe a large amount of fine water vapors suspended in the air.
The volume of the water vapors in the air is used as an indicator of what kind of weather should develop.
When the weather is warm and humid the amount of suspended water vapor will be greater than in cold weather.

There are many methods of measuring the amount of humidity present.
One method used to measure humidity is by what is termed the Dew Point. To measure the dew point a mirror is exposed to the outside weather. As the mirror cools the amount of moisture that is deposited on the mirrors surface is calibrated.
This is called the dew point.

Another form of measuring instrument for humidity is a hair hygrometer and a hygrometer that uses the measurements of electrical resistance to determine the level of humidity present.

The wet bulb method involves water that is evaporated from the bulb of a thermometer and the resulting drop in temperature on the thermometer scale is recorded.
The temperature is compared to the reading of another thermometer that has had no water placed upon the bulb and placed in the same area.
The difference in temperatures are calculated and this measurement is referred to as relative humidity.

A small water proof heater can be used to control the amount of humidity in a small area. Suitable heaters that are safe can be found at heatal.com. The heaters are portable and economical to operate.

Tropical humidity and pets

Cats and other pets that are part of the natural ecology in humid and tropical zones have adapted to their climate in a variety of ways. The period of acclimatization is achieved over long periods of time. Introduced animals and pets that have not had the chance to be exposed to the humidity levels that are present in tropical zones can suffer from humidity stress and other ailments.

Tropical areas are often humid because the upper level of clouds that are saturated with water vapors will create rain.
The rain begins to fall from the upper levels of atmosphere to a lower level of the atmosphere.
The lower levels of the atmosphere is warmer in temperature and this warmth evaporates the falling rain and creates a high level of humidity.

Humidity and pets health

When heat and humidity reaches high levels, any strenuous physical activity for your cat or travel in a transport box should be avoided.
The high humidity level will prevent the pets body from cooling down because of the cats body's inability to sweat freely.
Other problems for your cat and other pets on days of high temperature or humidity are stokes, cramps and exhaustion. Any of these conditions can be dangerous for your pet.
They are caused by the loss of body fluids by your pet or the body temperature may not be able to cool itself naturally and it rises to a high temperature level.
Dehydration of your pet can be averted by letting the cat or pet have free access to water and shade.

A high humidity level can affect the fur on your pet. Difficulty experienced grooming hair on a day of high humidity is due to the hair or fur length being slightly longer than on a day with less humidity.

Dry throats, static electricity and breathing problems can be indicators of incorrect or a difficult humidity level for your pet.

If your pet is showing signs of stress that appears to be from the high level of humidity a visit to the veterinarian may be of benefit.

There are a number of good veterinary web sites.

The design of a structure or building can also affect the amount of humidity present in the building. A building or cats house that is not properly designed can create problems for your pet in humid or tropical areas.

The level of humidity within a pets enclosure or cats house should be about forty percent. This can be achieved and controlled by installing a humidifier or dehumidifier.

The methods of producing humidity can be termed as adiabatic or isothermal. Adiabatic humidifiers create a mist or vapor by mechanical means and are economical to operate because they do not need to heat the water to create humidity. Water droplets are injected under force into the atmosphere where they evaporate and increase the level of humidity. Because the water does not require heating, this method of creating a humid outflow is faster than the isothermal method of creating humidity. The level of humidity can also be controlled easier because of the rapid production of humidity.

Different levels of humidity can affect your pets fur. This will be apparent when you are grooming your pets coat or fur.

Adiabatic humidifiers cool the area that is being humidified unless the humidified air is released into an external heat source. Adiabatic created humidity has an advantage if the area also requires cooling but if heating is required to the area, the cost of operating an adiabatic form of humidity may not be the most economical choice.
Isothermal humidifiers create humidity by heating the water source to steam and releasing the heated steam into the living area.

Most humidifiers need care with the water used to create humidity. Some of the treatments for water that is used in humidifiers are reverse osmosis, mineral removal or having the water deionized. The treated water will still leave behind a residue of minerals and other contaminants inside the humidifier when it is used over a period of time.

Humidity within a cat or other pet enclosure can also be achieved by wetting the ground covering of the enclosure with water and letting the water evaporate.
When using this method of creating humidity for your pet the damp floor covering must be allowed to dry completely before wetting it again.
This will minimize the chance of a fungus or any bacteria that exist within the cats enclosure from growing to a high level.

A simple method to humidify an area and control humidity is to use a cheap hand mister. Spraying a light mist of water will create a level of humidity for your pets or cats enclosure.
