3x3 Eyes
(Who has 9 eyes?)
3x3 Eyes is a long-running manga with 36 (!) volumes available in Japan under the name Sazan Eyes (or, to be anally correct, Sa-za-n A-i-zu).We are (inevitably) some way behind - at the time of writing, Dark Horse have published 3 volumes. After the 2nd volume, Dark Horse started printing Sazan Eyes stories in Super Manga Blast.
Basically, the story revolves about a 3-eyed creature called Pai. One day she meets Yakumo - the son of a professor who was helped by her. In return for her help, he told Pai that Yakumo would help her become human.
Understandably, Yakumo doesn't believe any of this but when Pai's 'pet' causes havoc in the city, he has no choice but to go along with the story.
Unfortunately, the beast kills Yakumo. However, Pai channels some of her energy into Yakumo so that he becomes - in essence - an invincible zombie. Thus begins their adventure to return to human form.
The story basically concentrates on the action-packed adventures that Pai and Yakumo encounter. On their way to humanity, they will encounter evil monsters, love, deception, and - occasionally - the truth.

As I learnt more about Pai's race, I found myself becoming more and more interested in the story and started genuinely caring for the characters.
The fact that the series was successful
enough in Japan to spawn 36 graphic novels (probably more by the time you
read this) surely says something about the quality of the work.
