I am still doing research
prior to converting my trusted Wing to a trike As once
I've
gone this route there is really no turning back to two
wheels. Not saying it can't be done. But why convert
if you want two wheels any way.
I've came up with a little
food for thought list prior to converting. This
may help those interested in converting to a trike.

Why convert in the
first place
-
People convert there
machine for several reasons
These are some of mine.
People with physical disabilities that want to ride or
continue to ride can and this is the way to do it.
-
No more parking your
bike with the side stand down, coming back to find it laying
on its side. For what ever reason it fell down.
-
Want a little more
cargo space.
-
Want to haul a little
larger camper trailer.
-
Want the feel of more stab ability
on those wet roads. Not to mention those graded bridges.
-
No more embarrassment
of tipping over when your co-rider climbs on are off.
Some other reasons I've found
that individuals convert to a trike.
-
Want their bikes to be
noticed {status symbol}
-
Let everyone Know they
spent a few thousand more on their bikes then everyone
else.
-
I even talked to one
individual whom said he was afraid to ride on two
wheels. He couldn't ride a bicycle. {Hard to
believe' possibly true}

Things you loose when
you convert to a trike.
-
The feel of the lean
in the curve and on those windy roads.
-
With the above in mind
no more concern about high are low siding in those curves
either.
-
Fuel mileage
-
Power of the
dependable 6 cylinder engine due to extra weight.
-
Storage Space in the
garage
-
Need a larger parking
space {Where two bikes could fit its only one}
-
One last item: no more
side stand is needed

Choosing a Conversion
Kit Manufacture
-
There are a lot of manufactures
out there. The problem is deciding which one is for
you. When asking trike owners which manufacture is
best you will get a lot of different answers. The Key is to
ask a lot of questions not only of trike owners themselves
but comparing the difference in the conversion manufactures.
Some conversions have independent suspension, others
don't. Different manufactures take away cargo space
others add some. If you notice some body panels are flared
others aren't. Some use the OEM drive shaft and shocks
others don't. Manufacture X recommends you
change the rake of the steering others say you don't have to
with their conversion. The list goes on and on.
Before you jump and start the conversion process do your
home work. Talk to trike owners. Get different manufactures
brochures, study, compare it to the others.

Potential Problems
After Converting
-
Warranty work on
not only your Trike conversion but also the Honda Gold Wing
Warranty as well.
-
Maintenance on the
conversion. That is if your not mechanically
inclined.
-
Replacement parts
for the conversion when needed.
-
Insurance:
The Trike is no longer just a Gold Wing. Be sure and talk
to your insurance agent. Mine really didn't
understand. On that note if you pull a trailer with
your bike be sure and talk your agent about this as well.
-
Resale value of the
Trike. There are several individuals looking for Gold
Wings but only a few looking for Trikes. There is a lot of
those hard earned $$$
put into a conversion. You may be waiting awhile to
sale.
|
Before starting the conversion process do your home work. Talk
to trike owners, most love their trikes and would ride
nothing else. Compare the differences between manufactures.
They all talk a good deal. Take a test ride on a
trike. Be prepared to change your riding style as trikes do
handle different. Most off all after the conversion be
sure and practice safe riding skills. |
