My First Trike Ride

My Experience as I rode my first
Gold Wing Trike

I talked to a couple of Gold Wing Trike owners about converting mine to a trike. They gave me ideas and their thoughts on the best conversion and what they thought was the best company and this and that.  One individual event mentioned that he would let me take a test ride on his.   Not thinking to much of this I stated I would take a rain check and maybe some other time.  A few weeks passed and I received a phone call wanting to know if I still wanted to take a test ride on a trike.  We made plans for  the next weekend.  When I arrived at the local cafe to my surprise there were several gold wings and three trikes in the parking Lot.  After a few cups of coffee and a lot of pointers about trikes we went to the parking lot.

I was passed the keys and I climbed on and started it up.  The first thing I noticed was I didn't have to take it of the side stand.  I drove around the parking lot a couple of times.  To my surprise can you ever make a very slow 360 turn.  When I came to a stop I didn't have to put  my  feet down to balance the bike.  I guess after riding on two wheels it becomes second nature. Then I went around the block a couple of times.  What a experience this was.  Pulling on to the street from the parking lot I did notice a little jolt from the dip.  This must be due to the straight axle. As I rolled on the throttle I noticed right away there is no lean,  your seating straight up.  There is for sure a little more effort needed in the handle bars.  As I approached the first stop sign and stopped, once again no feet down.  Hard habit to break.   Up to the next couple of stop signs got that feet thing right these times.  Then around the block.  Noticed once again that no lean and a little effort on the handle bars.  Back into the parking lot I went.  Noticed that jolt thing again.   Then to the parking space and stopped.  I went to put my feet down again.  Then just before I dismounted went for the side stand.  Old habits are hard to break.

We talked for awhile about riding techniques and this and that.  Everyone was getting ready for the groups ride to you guessed it the next restaurant for lunch.  To cut the story short I rode his trike to the next restaurant.  He was on mine.  As we all left the parking lot I didn't notice that jolt as I entered the street.  Guess my mind was on the ride.  I did make it through the stop signs and lights with my feet up.  As I was receiving a few pointers  over the radio.  When we entered the on ramp to the highway I immediately noticed no lean and being forced to the out side of the curve.  This with a little effort in steering  and I was going slow.  Then as I entered the highway and rolled on the throttle to pick up speed I  noticed right off the lack of power are was my Wing that strong.

We preceded down the highway.  The other riders moved around me leaving the other trikes and my bike in the rear of the group.  I noticed how stable the trike was as a few miles and traffic had passed us.  I adjusted to the steering of the trike and  became more comfortable with the trike.  After about a hour on the road I was asked by the leader if I was ready to pick up the pace.  I didn't even observe they were riding slower waiting for me to become accustom to the trike.  What a great group of riders.   I replied sure and off we went.  As the group pulled off once again I noticed the lack of power.  Not really that much but I was use to my bike.  Once we got up to cursing speed I set the cruse control and was ready to enjoy the ride. Then came the time to pass a semi truck.  Blinker on and around we went never having to role on the power.  I did notice the stability of the Trike as we went through the  cross wind of the truck.  A few more miles passed I turned on the CD player.  I have just got to have one of those, better than the cassette player.  A couple of us had to make a pit stop.  You know how the coffee goes.  When we stopped I did get the feet thing right this time.  But dang it, went for the kick stand when I went to get off.

After a little stretch we all got back on and ready to ride on.  I found that backing a trike is a piece of cake.  We all got lined up and began rolling out of the rest stop.  Off we road moving into the traffic lane back up to cursing speed cruse control on CD Player playing.  Put a couple of new CD's in at the pit stop.  I was in Wing Heaven on a trike.  I didn't even notice the lack of power are really the steering differences.  A few more miles passed.  Time to move off the major highway and on to the lunch stop.  Speed down turn signal on, to the off ramp working that steering again feeling that pull to the outside of the curve.  Merging with traffic back in the group again.  I finally have the hang of a trike.  With a few more days and a lot more miles of practice I will be as proficient as riding my Wing on two wheels.  Up the road was what I dislike more than wet leaves on the road in the fall,  the dreaded ....GRADED BRIDGE....  Slowing down to prepare for the bridge onto it I went.  About half way across I thought is this trike stable are what.  Off the bridge I went speed back up.  Trikes are a lot more stable than I thought.  The drive across the bridge, diffently was not like on my Wing.  I have a super brace installed on the front of mine as well.  We have been across a few together in our miles for sure.  This was to me  a noticeable different ride.

As we entered the little town we stopped at a few stop lights.  I got the feet thing down now for sure.  As we made a few left and right turns onto different streets I got the steering down too.  We finally made it to the lunch stop.  Pulled into the parking lot and prepared to go inside couple approached me and asked how I liked my trike. I thought trike owners get this all the time.  I said this ones not mine just a test drive before I convert mine.  I pointed towards my Wing as I said that's my trike in waiting next to the one I just parked.  You know as I said this it appeared as if my Trusted Wing shined a little brighter as we looked its way.  After a short pause I  said to them, I love them but please talk to the owner who is over there.

Many Thanks to Mr T. Rhodes
for the test ride
