Here is the list of
few hotels in budget category.
A-One
Hotel (+91 79 2149823), is opposite the train station. Basic
singles/doubles go for Rs. 90/140 without private bathroom or Rs.
175/250 with cold water shower.
Hotel Naigra, just
off Relief Road, has fairly quiet but cramped rooms which are
airless and a little grubby. A single with shared bathroom
goes for Rs. 100 while a room with private bathroom costs Rs.
160/180.
Hotel Roopalee
Guest House (+91 79 5503135, Dr. Tankaria Road), near Sidi Saiyad's
Mosque, is not a bad choice. Simple but pleasant and clean
rooms with bucket hot water and TV cost Rs. 150/200, or there's a
dorm for Rs. 55. the staff are friendly and a number of
travelers have given this place the thumbs up.
Hotel Natraj (+91
79 5506048), near Lal Darwaja, is marginally better. Rooms
cost Rs. 130/220/300 for a basic single/double/triple with bathroom
but no shower - bucket hot water is available in the morning.
some rooms have a balcony overlooking the pleasant gardens of Ahmed
Shah's Mosque.
Hotel Mukam (+91 79
5509080, Khanpur Road), near the Nehru Bridge, is also good value in
the upper-budget range. Decent rooms with satellite TV starts
Rs. 275/370, though you'll pay more for air-condition rooms. |
Ahmedabad - Places to Stay
- Mid Range
|
Hotel
Serena (+91 79 5510136, Dr. Tankaria Road), not far from Sidi
Saiyad's Mosque, is probably the best-value mid-range option.
Pleasant, clean and modern rooms start at Rs. 325/450. There's
an excellent restaurant too.
The cluster of
hotels close to the intersection of Relief Road and Dr. Tankaria
Road all have modern, clean and comfortable rooms, although at each
the more expensive rooms are better value. Most rooms come
with private bathroom, satellite TV and 24-hour hot water.
Hotel Good Night
(+91 79 5507181) has somewhat sterile rooms starting at Rs. 325/450
or Rs. 475/600 for air-conditioned rooms
Hotel Capri (+91 79
5507143) is slightly better but is also more expensive (Rs. 425500
and upwards). Management accepts Visa.
Hotel Balwas (+91
79 5507135) just across the road, is arguably the nicest of the
three. Its deluxe rooms are particularly good value at Rs.
450/575 with a balcony if you can't escape the chaos of Relief Road,
you might as well look down on it for endless entertainment.
The noise is however, a major problem.

Ahmedabad - Places to
Eat
|
|
The strict
vegetarianism of the Jains has contributed to Gujarat's
distinctive regional cuisine. Ahmedabad is a good place
to sample the Gujarati version of the Thali - it's the
traditional all-you-can-eat vegetarian meal with an even
greater variety of dishes than usual, though some can be
overpoweringly sweet.
At the bottom
end of the scale there's excellent Muslim (nonveg) street food
available near Teen Darwaja on Bhathiyar Gali, a small street
which runs parallel to Gandhi Road. Stalls set up each
evening and for around Rs. 25 you can get good feed.
there are halal meat, fish and vegetarian dishes to choose
from.
Nishat
Restaurant (+91 79 5507335, Khas Bazaar), in the same area, is
a friendly place which servers good tandoori dishes for under
Rs. 40 (save for a full chicken which costs Rs. 72).
Gandhi Cold
Drink House, across the lane, is a popular spot with locals
for a lassi or ice cream.
Gopi Dining
hall, just off the west end of Ellis bridge, near V S Hospital,
is one of the most popular thali places. Excellent
all-you-can-eat Gujarati Thalis are Rs. 45 (lunch) or Rs. 55
(Dinner).
Sankalp
Restaurant (+91 79 6583550), off Ashram Road (and other
branches at C G Road and Gandhinagar-Sarkhej Highway) is worth
a visit. This air-condition restaurant boasts one of the
longest dosas in India !! the Rs. 40 South Indian thalis
also make a pleasant change from the sweet Gujarati cuisine.
Agashiya (+91
79 5506946, vcvl@vsnl.com,
Dr. Tankaria Road), opposite Sidi Saiyad's Mosque, is one of
Ahmedabad's best dining experiences right in the center of
town. Set atop one of the city's finest mansions (dating
from the early 20th century), the lovely terrace area has
faultless service and daily banquets for lunch (Rs. 135, noon
to 2.30pm) and dinner (Rs. 170, 7 to 11 pm). The dinner
menu which changes everyday, includes introductory fruit
juices, entrees, a multitude of veg main dishes, sweets and
ice cream. It's a great place to sample quality Gujarati
cuisine and pretend you're not really in one of India's most
congested cities. Vishalla,
on the southern edge of town in Vasana, is a "theme"
dining experience that evokes the atmosphere of a Gujarati
Village. You eat in Indian fashion, seated on the floor
in rustic wooden huts, and within the complex there are craft
stalls, a puppet display and a utensils museum. Lunch
(11am to 2pm) costs Rs. 125; dinner (7.30 to 11pm) is Rs. 190
and is accompanied by music and dance performances. The
veg-only-food is a set all-you-can-eat meal, though dessert
costs extra. Bus no. 31 will get you within walking
distance; an auto rickshaw from the center of the town will
cost about Rs. 30, but expect to pay about Rs. 50 for the
return trip. Mirch
Masala (C G Road) also evokes a Gujarati Village, this time
with the aid of colorful murals. Although its a la carte
menu is good for dinner (Rs. 75 and up), the veg/nonveg lunch
specials (Rs. 85/125) are brilliant value. For your
money, you get a salad, pappadams, five main dishes, ice
cream, sweets and as much as buttermilk as you can
drink. It all happens from noon to 3.30pm and the
friendly staff accepts Visa and MasterCard. It's
something of an Ahmedabad Institution, so you may have to
queue.
